Another thanks to a MOBO....

Knowing the entrance well, we often sail in when it's busy and this doesn't cause any problems provided we have a free wind. If tacking we'll generally furl the jib and motorsail the entrance. I've been known to do this without a cone, beware!

Not many sail boats do use a cone whilst motor sailing through the entrance, but it is usually obvious and most follow the stream of traffic rather than shouting the odds - well, thats been my experiance anyway ...

Just to put another spanner in the works. Chichester Harbour Local Notice to Mariners
3/00 International Regulations for Preventing CollisionsUnder Because of the considerable traffic in the harbour, mariners are to pay particular attention to:-

c) if under power and sail displaying a black cone point down or letting fly sheets.

Don't know where they got that bit about letting fly sheets from.

Just to confirm the 20 knot Mobo existed, as it did the same to us in Osborne Bay. However he did not cause as much fun as the raggie, who sailed into Cowes on Saturday, with a nice northerly, to find the Chain Ferry in the way! Not easy to go astern with sails up, and no motor running.

I've still got my old yellow/blue dunlop wellies from circa 1980, i remember then it was yella wellies verses ditch crawlers, now it seems to be raggies v stink boats, same old argument. Mobo's, as the new term seems to be, can be just as difficult to manoeuvre at times. Chichester is nearly always busy at weekends, adds to the fun, many different flavours of boating mixing it. There are are always going to be the spoilers in all walks of life, I try and keep out of their way and muse at their ignorance.

The ColRegs are unambiguous on this. A 'power-driven vessel' remains such, regardless of how many bits of canvas are up and whether or not a motoring cone is displayed.

A marine underwriter once told me that it seemed crazy to him that so many sailing types effectively threw away the protection of their expensive insurance policies when motor-sailing without a cone displayed. He pointed out that most policies require the insured to operate within the laws - including IRPCS. Should a third-party claim be made, it would be established whether 'power-driven' at the time of incident - and whether a motoring cone was displayed.

Breach of the Regs may well lead to a repudiation of claim by insurers.

So I recommend using a motoring cone - it takes seconds to attach, and your crew can get some healthy exercise wandering up to the foredeck and fitting it.

Thoughts?

Those black plastic cones and balls

Started using them last year. Don't take any time to put up, but suspect we got some funny looks. Almost as bad form as displaying a Blue Enzyme (which we don't).

Thanks for that Pappaecho!

We were entering Cowes and saw that as we were not far behind. Couldn't understand what had happened. One of the crew said perhaps the engine wasn't running, but surely not!

Back to Chi on Sunday pm, was a bit busy. Not too sure about setting a start line for the lasers right across the channel
though.

sailing in sweden has shown the hipocracy of mobos,in the islands outside stokholm i asked a mobo why he came out he said for peace and quite to get away from noise and polution then got ready to race around the chanell between the islands with his daughter in a rubber innertube!
when i look at small 8/10foot boats in marinas they now have not 25hp but 100+hp outboards and only two speeds flatout or stop, sometimes quite a few in fact raceing through the islands drunk and eyes glued to their plotter end up smashed on a rock between ndham and waxholm others less disabled just put up huge wash and to hell with anyone else then climb into their 4x4 at 10mpg and go home to preach ecological ways!
mobos should be banned if the put up to much wash or to noisy or use more than 1 gallon of any fule ph
mobos owners are egoisitic pigs

ok mobo s are at times an anoyence
today to of us sailed out of a peaceful bay into a f4/5 just to get away from a9year old with abreal (small)racing boat which was fast with a 35hp i know he was 9 as his parentsbhad been tellimg us what a good sailor he is
Now anchored in a quite bay full of lillys and not far from town i feel less badly disposed to mobos
cant understand why they take mild critisisum so badly?
perhaps i ought to get one?but only with a small motor and perhaps a small sail--umm

I think you'll find that some Mobo owners say the same about raggies ... can't steer a straight course for one!

Re: The Blue Rinse Specialist

How is your eye-sight ? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Are you sure that the 25hp and 100hp were not 2.5 and 10.0, as fitting the former onto 8 or 10ft boats would be ridiculously dangerous.
The Swedes don't do "ridiculously dangerous".
