...for charging through the mooring trots outside Cowes yesterday at about 20kts. The wash was very impressive and you must have been very proud. I was delighted to throw my drink all over the galley and for the lunch to go in the sink.
 
Stellagirl, surely your gratitude would have been better directed on the MoBo forum?
 
Osea Island - Sunday afternoon - c.15-20 boats at anchor and a deep v hull gin palace decides it's cool to cruise up and down at a relatively slow speed, deliberately keeping in displacement mode, so that the 6-7 jetskis buzzing around him like mossies on shite can use his wake as ski-jump ramps. Does he think that the wake just evaporates once they've had their fun with it.

Did you know that you can buy paintball guns - you know the high powered compressed air things firing paint pellets of bright orange?

Why might these two trains of thought be linked?

"Power gives way to sail" he yells from the wrong side of the Channel, trouble was he must the only Yacht which makes 3knts against the tide with his sails flapping as he is going almost head to wind, strange about the water coming out of his exaust as well wonder, what that was for?

Dead stopped to prevent a collision which ment that the Solo Race (who were at least wind assisted) were now on course to T-Bone me, with much *** language of the "get out of the way were racing" variety. Only place to go was very close to the bank (inside the bouys on a falling tide) still this time no damage done.

Sorry for your Lunch Stella Girl but there are all sorts of Prats out there. I am afraid I become more and more in favour of a boating driving lisence.
 
You are of course correct that he was motoring but I think it would be wise to regard any boat with sails up as "sailing" because it's still more difficult for him to manouvre than it is for you in a mobo.
 
If he has difficulty maouvring then he should furl his sails. It's his problem because, like it or not, he is motoring and is jsubject to motoring rules.

no it would be extremely unwise, and it's not really his call anyway as the yacht had decided he should be considered under sail and was clearly basing his obligations under IRPCS wrongly on that - but as the poster has said he took the necessary action in relation to that craft which ultimately caused problems for yet more craft.

Anyway, for what it's worth, there were definitely more power prats than sail ones in my vicininity this weekend.........and on at least 3 occasions I ended up shaking my head in tacit agreement with yacht helms over the antics of some.

I also saw terrible driving behaviour by many too but that's life...........

The age old raggie in the channel ..... mobo not getting out of way .....

I'm a raggie owner and also enjoy odd hours with stinkie ....

It is sad that these posts come up again and again .... as it shows the lack of fairness in some.

I have had in Chichester Channel funnily enough ... a large AWB sheeted in hard thinking he's Admirals Cup job ploughing his way through the saturday throng - oblivious to the mayhem he caused all .... near slicing me in half - avoided by my full astern engine ....

Large Storebro forcing me and others out of the narrow channel by hogging dead centre .... a Nich 38 being silly - see blue ensign post for these ....

There are some really selfish idiots out there .....

But my worst so far has to be the Jet Ski incident outside Cowes ..... which I know some on here will remember - as I called the Caostguard and reported them .... others followed suit by reporting as well - about 2 year back ... he had side-swiped me while wife and I were handing mainsail ... nearly causing wife to go overboard .... we got water in the cabin, cockpit etc. etc. He then jetted of towards Southsea ... swiping a few other boats on the way .... I believe but not sure that Police met them at S/sea .....
 
I popped into Chi yesterday to have a spot of lunch at anchor by East Head.

As a raggie I admit I took down the flappies and did motor in (not with sails up) as I am not overly familiar with this entrance. It would seem to me to be a bit of a tight spot to sail for sailings sake in a light breeze, best to get clear and then pootle at your particular pace! Or would that just be common sense!
 
Actually what makes you think that its harder for him to manouver, as someone who has owned dingies and yachts before a Mobo, I am not sure I agree with you, especially when heading into the wind! On a dead run perhaps, with the possibility of a gybe but if you'r running why turn on the iron sail? all you do is reduce the actual wind in your sails!

My post was more about the fact that there are prats of all sorts out there, and yes I assume that everyone I meet has never picked up a copy of the Col Regs. That why I stopped rather than hold my course (any other manouver would almost certainly put me in even more problems with the Solo race).

And with respect to the issue of flying a cone, no but then he probably would know what it meant anyway. His give away was the magical ability to sail at about 5 degrees to the apparent wind, something I would love to do next time I am out Yacht racing!
 
Some very interesting (and some slightly depressing) responses to this piece of advice given to me many years ago by my yachtmaster instructor.

Unless the yacht has declared itself to be motorsailing by putting up a cone (something I've seen about twice in the last thirty years), surely it makes sense to consider it to be sailing and act accordingly. If you're at a distance where water can be seen coming out of the exhaust it's far too late to be making decisions about who is the stand-on vessel.

it shouldn't only be in adversity (danger, breakdown etc) that we can pull together .............
