Our starboard TAMD71B (380 hp) is overheating over about 1500 rpm, but cools down rapidly when throttled back to about 1000 rpm. We have checked the thermostat, replaced the impeller, checked the exhaust elbow, flushed the system with agua fuerte and the flow of raw water out appears about right (checked with hose off).
Has anyone got any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Overheating

I had the same problem with my 71b,like you checked all the obvious and it turned out to be the fresh water pump, the impeller became detached from the shaft, looked ok when we took the cover off but you could just turn the impeller on the shaft. hope this helps.

~Ditto the fresh water pump,
I tried everything you have plus a lot more but eventually it came down to the fresh water pump.
Turns out they are easy to check, easy to change,.....as long as you can get access to it!!.
Over the last year I've become very intimate with the 71B's. If you need any help send me a Pm and I'll let you know my mobile number.
Also let me know if you need engine manuals/parts pics.

Good luck.

Have you strpped the heatexchangers, the seals in under th e cover looks like a top hat can fail and dissapear alltogether, thus allowing the raw water to pass straight over the top of the tube stack and not flow through the tubes cooling the fresh water, did you strip down the exchangers to flush out or just pump it through recirculating the fluid, I always use rydelime its fantastic had great results with it.

Yes could be the fresh w pump, on a 435 its easy to get to.

As usual Paul adds some excellent advice....just be carefull with refitting the top caps on the after coolers, I managed to pinch an o ring which caused some seawater to get into the intake. No long term damage caused, but I did have to take the heads off to make sure! If I could have got all the injectors out, I wouldn't have had to take the heads off! I've now got a neat little injector puller just in case of any future problems:)

We used the volvo engine cleaner cause we got a good deal, but it's probably the same stuff as redlyme. Spent a whole day filling and flushing!
It was amazing the dirt and cr*p that came out. And the difference to the inner surface of the cooling pipes/hoses, you could almost eat your dinner of them......well if you know what I mean.
The stbd engine now runs a few degrees cooler than the port, so I think the port engine will be due for the same treatment over winter.

Where are you and the boat based? I'd be happy to talk you through it if needed.

Thanks for all the advice, chaps. Taking it all on board and will run through the suggestions. Boat is in Spain.
