Using only the attached photo, explain how ridiculous it was for the six crew and dog to be rescued after loss of mast and engine failure.

Some miles off the coast of Morocco, passing cruise ship took them aboard.

Surely they could have fashioned paddles from the internal doors and rowed themselves to safety. Or something.

Being serious for a moment, isn't it better to stay on a sound yacht than to transfer to a small dinghy? Even if they are only 10 miles from shore. On the yacht, they have food, water and shelter. On the dinghy they have very little. The yacht is far more visible to passing ships too. In the dinghy they might be able to rescue themselves, but I think they were better off on the yacht.
(or was this thread never supposed to be serious and I have just been tricked into a rabbit hole?)

"If you step DOWN into your life raft, you are making a mistake." I was told.
Never had to, hopefully never will.

Some miles off the coast ... can be close or far. Depending on wind and current.

I see a dinghy on board for which they probably had an outboard and I guess something in the 5 - 8 hp range.
One can do a lot which such a rig, the conditions on the photo do not look too horrible.

How did they loose the mast?
How long were they already adrift?

Lots of unknown circumstances and easy to talk sitting at home.

Ooh, I wish I was inclined to conspiracies..

Six is a lot of them
Surely a boat that size has a keel stepped mast?
Where's the wreckage?
Where's the damage?
The back stay must have come down yet the spray hood etc is intact?
Why not use the dinghy to tow the boat?

I reckon they just fancied a more comfortable cruise

Interesting just seen a documentary about a Spanishyacht were the skipper had a heart attack, the crew contacted with a cruise ship but the captain of the cruise ship refused to launch a lifeboat to move the Victime from the yacht to the ship and there was too much swell to get alongside……..the victim died soon after and was buried at sea with permission of the family and authorities

Have to say I’d be grateful to be rescued from that. Only half a boat, and no mast is a serious ‘pass the bucket’ job. That could quickly become a medical emergency.
Of course, we don’t know the circumstances. On the face of it, in what appears to be windless conditions, I would have hoped to be able to motor a good way. In my boat that could be as much as 400 miles with a full tank. There may have been other damage, or even injury problems to deal with, needing assistance, or a fouled prop.
