Please try to keep this on a sensible level. Can anybody think of another name for Commodore (not for the Commodore). Instead of committee it could be management group but what name would you give to the 'Officers'. This traditional is fine but the young think it's time for new names and I agree.

I hope you are posting with tongue in cheek….

Sailing and boating is steeped in tradition one we would do well to respect and enlighten our younger members about so as they will grow up to appreciate their heritage and history (good and bad).

If Commodore was good enough for many of the greats that preceded us its good enough for me and my grandchildren.

Leave it alone.

My YC already has a President as well as Commodore.

In these PC times it must be Chairperson surely /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I thought Directors were persons who interpreted the rules in Bridge Clubs?

Its a serious question, but I fear there is not a serious alternative.

Anything that might do just sounds banale, or even more ridiculous than Commodore..which is just a tad pretentious if we are honest, but its traditional and when push comes to shove, everybody knows where they are with a Commodore.

Its not up to us to change perfectly adequate things for the sake of accommodating the young. Its for the young to learn the reason for their being there in the first place. They soon get used to the idea, and over time appreciate it.

Don't get me started on golf clubs though /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I'd say it's a very pompous title, except that the people who fill the role are in my experience rarely pompous, so I suppose we're stuck with it.

I always though that Chairman was actually an asexual term - it's just that with the PC they would like ' Chair', 'Chairperson' or whatever!

Well I hate to mention the war, but if we'd lost it would have been something like "Herr Flottenadmiral"

Got quite a nice ring to it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Flag Officer, Asssistant Flag Officer, Deputy Assistant Flag Officer/House. Deputy Assistant Flag Officer Sailing. Flag Officer Accounts. Pretty silly really...How about Commodore, Vice Commodore Sailing , Vice Commodore House, and Treasurer?

Well I sympathise with your quest for a new name for the elected chief. I don't think we have much in common with the navy as a Yacht Club and no need of tradition. One of the reasons I am reluctant to be drawn into out YC committee is the obligation to buy and wear a uniform.
The tradition I really oppose in our club is the no hats to be worn in the bar. This in a place where everyone must wear a hat out in the sun it is tedious to have to find a place to stow your hat when you go inside.

Anyway on the other side of the argument. Our Commodore and other flag officers spend a lot of time as guests of other clubs they would feel less significant without the title and uniform or worse miss out on the invitation. good luck going against the flow. olewill

Commodore used to be a temporary rank denoting a captain who was pro-tem in charge of a squadron. This is why it's been picked up by Sailing / Yacht clubs as Commodores come and go.

I sometimes think we yield too readily to the demands of "yoof" who are probably embarrassed to use the terminology because it doesn't sound cool.

I'm very proud to be the current incumbent at our Sailing Club and the next generation aren't bothered by the titles because everyone calls me "Simon" or "hey you"! We have no rules about hats in the bar, or anywhere else for that matter and I certainly don't spend any time as a guest of other clubs unless I'm a part of a rally to somewhere.

I know several Commodores (real RN ones) and Yacht Club ones. I don't see any pomposity in either breed.

In fact the RN ones are generally there because they are bright and intelligent and have been promoted to do the job.

The Yacht club ones that I know are all completely non-pompous with one exception and as that is a local club to us I won't mention names. I also have a pretty low opinion of his sailing and boat handling, but that is another matter. Non of the clubs that I have any dealings with have 'uniforms' that the officials have to wear. In fact most of the officials of the yacht clubs that I know are hardworking individuals who are volunteering to help run the club.

It strikes me that you get pompous people in all walks of life. We get a few in the sailing world. They get cold and wet like all of us in the end.

I went to one recently that has a 'men only' day on Saturdays. Reason? Men work and need the time alone on the golf course on the weekends, result ban women on Saturdays so the chaps can do without the gals hey. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Absolutely true!! A woman friend has told me.
