I've 99% made up my mind to take a swing mooring at Fambridge next year. While Paglesham is cheaper, it seems pretty desolate and isolated. The people at Fambridge Haven have been really helpful and there seems to be reasonable facilities. Any better ideas?

While yr at that end of the river what about brandy hole where I am , they have a yard , free use of a pontoon , dinghy storage alongside pontoon , and it's alot cheapa than Fambridge , it's 15 mins further but if you've traveled that far up river then not much further , might be worth a look

I didn't like Brandy Hole for the following reasons:

  • Desolate and never anyone around and I need more nurse-maiding.
  • Dinghy storage is hit and miss and a bit chaotic and unsecure.
  • Pontoon access is a bun-fight.
  • Seems miles up-river. Nigel says only 15 minutes, but it seems much further than that.
  • There is always water THERE on the moorings, but there is not enough water on the bend to GET there!
What I did like:

  • The yard-manager. Lovely person, laid back, friendly and helpful.
  • The people I DID meet there.
  • The BH yacht club is very civilised and the toilets are LUSH if you are a member
.

I've gone to R&C which is a great for access, hard dinghy storage ashore (unsecure), water taxi. But I hear Priors is probably better for secure storage. Both more expensive than Brandy Hole, but not a lot in it.

Thanks Lisa

For me, Fambridge is closer travelling from Cambridge and close to S/end. Only been to Brandy hole once for the RSA laying up supper (probably the worst meal I have ever had to pay for although the company made up for it)

Had experience of R&C for a week on one of their moorings for the regatta a couple of years back.

Looks like Fambridge has it at the moment.

Nige, BH is half the price of Fambridge coz you only get water half the time :p

I keep looking around 'cos there's no getting away from the fact that swinging moorings at Fambridge are on the expensive side but the alternatives never measure up

For us, on a small boat like ours, the facility to lay alongside the pontoon for the night or even an entire weekend at minimal cost is a huge advantage. It effectively gives us many of the benefits of a marina berth at half the cost

I like the fact that there's always people around the place which makes it less of a target for thieves and vandals. The Ferry Boat is as good as it gets for both food and beer (and hopefully the new tenant will sort out the accomodation too - that has proved useful to us in the past when we've had a working weekend with more people involved than could comfortably sleep on board) and the marina facilities are available to swinging moorers too

I ought to get around to joining the yacht club really which adds another layer of facility (use of the club house, storage container etc.) although lack of time to get properly involved puts me off a bit

Fair enough, if funds were unlimited, I'd probably move Brigantia to BYH or Bradwell just to be closer to the action as it were but that said I don't actually find the run up and down the Crouch to be that much of an issue anyway most of the time. It's a couple of hours to be sure but that's time we often put to good use getting organised at the start or end of a trip

I've never had a issue with the tide getting on or off mooring , when would you want to leave a up river mooring at low water anyway ? ? Surely going with tide is a better idea , yes I agree the pontoon could pose a problem on a busy w/e but hang on , dinghy out to boat and go sailing isn't that the thing to do ?
I came out of the marina at Fambridge a couple of weeks ago and was back on my mooring in about 20 mins , it literally just round the bend , also for me I find it easier to single hand off a swinging mooring than go in and out marina's .

Lisa says desolate , not sure what that means really , how many people do you need to get on your boat and go sailing

I have sailed with a friend who has a swing mooring at Fambridge and pays extra for the valet mooring - seems like a brilliant idea (if you really want to be on the Crouch).

Bradwell Creek moorings may be an alternative. Admin by Bradwel Outdoors Centre for ECC.

Have you looked at Essex Marina ?. As I recall it's next to a camp site which has good points as well as bad, swinging moorings through to pontoon too

Crouch moorings

Hi Flipper, I have a pontoon in Bridgemarsh Marina on the north side of the crouch same as Fambridge but about 4 miles down river , no idea of your budget but an inside berth is about £42 ft an outside £ 48 ft per year +vat, access Lw + 2hrs
Nice place and friendly people not sure of the price difference re the swinging mooring at Fambridge but for me i think it was about £600 cheaper, I sail at least twice a week up till the end of November plus its easy to maintain the boat tied to a pontoon , so a saving of £600 in my opinion isnt worth the hassle.

Thanks Roger, I need somewhere with reasonable access from Cambridge for mates to get down and Southend, where I spend most weekends, with decent facilities - Fambridge seems to fit the bill so far.

Ye I did Dave, and it's handy for Southend but I would like the boat a decent distance away so I have to commit to going there. The yard is only 10 mins from the GF's place at the moment and I tend to 'pop down and have a look' rather than make a concerted effort to spend a day on the boat.

Fambridge is still a nose ahead at the moment.

Oh yeah...and I could sneer at Nige as he slimes his way back to his mud berth :-)

that price is only £1200.00 less than i pay for an all tide access on the Orwell

Thanks, I'll look into that. The swinging mooring annual cost at Fambridge is £127 per metre in/out, do about £85 per month for Kat B
