Another boring post

Hi Mike never seen rudders and props with that much growth on down here, except for 54 Birchwood we collected once from Cabopino we had to get a diver down to clear the props they were so bad, apparantly the boat had not moved for at least 18months.

She looks good now though have a great season

I've tried Propspeed in the Med (my boat is based not far from Hurricane's) and it was an expensive waste of money

Wow, that's truly impressive sterngear fouling, Hurricane. I'm not sure that my boat would move at all with that lot hanging off it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Please can you give us some detail about the Velox treatment. How much did it cost? How easy is it to apply? Did you get the stuff in Spain or UK? My boat is being lifted in about 3 weeks and I might give it a go as well

G'day Hurricane

The product over here is called Prop Speed, a single application has been on the companies P66 for 4 years now, including a couple of close shaves with the sand, and she is still clean.

By the way, we do not sell or apply this product, it just works.

For any-one who is interested!

Today I just booked the Princess for a haul-out and anti-foul at the Gold Coast City Marina (Queensland, Aus), before she is bought home to Tasmania next week.

I spoke to Ryan, the dockmaster, and asked him about Prop Speed. He said they haul 3,000 boat per year and 90% use Prop Speed, with a 90% approval on the product. He said it works on a friction basis, not the concept of traditional anti-fouling paint. Being a 2 part systems product that relies heavily on getting it right on application, it is not recommended for the DIY operator.

Prop Speed is only warranted if apply by a licensed applicator, who put yours on?

AndieMac, it was applied by the Propspeed dealer in Majorca where I am based at a cost of about €2000 so, yes, it was most definitely applied by somebody who should know how to apply it. Within 4-5 weeks, barnacles were growing on the props and shortly after, the treatment itself was starting to flake off. As I say, an expensive waste of money.
You seem to be promoting the virtues of this product on other threads too. Any connection with the company?

It was Hempel Seatech that was put on by the factory.
I believe that Seatech is just the water based equivalent of the Hard Racing AF which enables the factory to coat boats in the relatively confined spaces of the production line. I recoated it with Blakes Hard Racing which I understand to be the same but not water based.

Just for the record

JW ws relaunched this morning and I took her straight out for a spin.

33 knots - no problem

I wonder if the Velox is still on the props!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Hi Mike, that is some very impressive growth on the undergear. The underside now looks amazing and 33 knots hey cant wait to get aboard /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Stay safe and look forward to seeing you soon.

Michael

I certainly have no connection with any chandlery products what so ever, I will endorse a product if I am convinced the product is worthy. Local research strongly suggests this product is widely successful in this geographical location, when applied correctly.

My quote yesterday for the P66 was for $AU650.00, I can email you the quote. This was from one of the most expensive shipyards in the country, but their work is excellent.

Doing a conversion on my quote to euro's, would suggest you were grossly over-charged, and I can understand your angst!

Working with moored boats and the ongoing issues that are associated with them every day, makes me more than satisfied with my trailable!

Another great post Mike, I bet you were choked when you saw the gunge on the bottom and the blocked thruster hole! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Why not lift her out tomorrow to see how much is left on the props? /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Go on, you know you want to and I don't suppose you've got anything else planned. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

AndieMac, don't forget that labour charges in the W Med are probably amongst the highest in the world. My cost included the lift out as well

[/ QUOTE ]Pointless. With the warm water we enjoy down here, when we want to check the undergear we just go for a swim... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Excellent post. It had me wondering if the a/f which Princess used is more effective in cooler British waters or against Plymouth based flora and fauna than it is in the warmer waters which Jenny Wren now enjoys?

I've certainly changed antifoul paint type since moving to the Med. I used to use either Interspeed or Micron CSC in the UK but, since moving to the Balearics 5 yrs ago, I've been persuaded by locals to use Titan Medium and it certainly seems to work. I lift my boat annually and I often have a debate whether to put another coat of antifoul on the hull at all, it works that well
But hull fouling is not the real issue in the Med. The real issue as Hurricane's pictures demonstrate is sterngear and thruster fouling, basically any surface which can't be covered with normal antifoul paint. My boat can easily lose 5-6kts in as many weeks in high summer due to sterngear fouling and I employ a diver 3-4 times per year to keep the sterngear and thrusters clean which is why I'm so interested to see whether Hurricane's Velox Plus treatment works

Interesting. I never had any problem, neither with hull nor with u/w gear (never had to clean it throughout the season), but I must admit that I don't know exactly which stuff my yard is using. They just told me they use it also for fishing and commercial boats, so the choice was a no brainer from my part (and not so expensive either).
Fwiw, both the blue of the hull and the grey of the gear is very similar to Hurricane vessel, but I don't think the primer was green(ish).
Will ask them next time I'll be there, asking also if they apply the same stuff on planing boats.
Surely 10 kts aren't going to put as much stress on prop paint as 30...

Thanks for that, not boring at all...although I'm looking forward to the snaps of trips you'll be taking on her /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Amazing growth, just goes to show how quickly these things can happen.

My ickle boat makes my Landrover seem small so the one with your car really puts the size into perspective.

Thanks again.
