At the moment, I'm down at Sant Carles - the new MDL marina in Spain.
The boat is nearly a year old (doesnt time fly) and I wanted to get her ready for the season so after a lot of planning, I decided to use the marina's new boat yard and using some local labour manage the whole thing myself.

This new yard is very impressive - a huge flat concrete area finished so clean and smooth that you could, literally, eat your lunch off it.

After a long drive form Santander, we lifted the boat last Tuesday - here are some pics.

She only just fits in the lift bay

But safe once in the travel lift.

Work immediatly started

This seems to be what happens when you buy a new boat and transfer to her to warm waters without any protection. The factory gave her 2 coats of antifoul but we've done over 2000 miles in her since and there wasn't much left.

And no wonder that my thrusters didnt work - just as well that I didn't need them then!! - eh

IMG_5671Medium.jpg

I'm now begining to realise the scale of her against my car. Also see how easy it is to work in this yard.

The wind blew up on Wednesday evening. So the yard manager popped out to ensure that I was safe and as a precaution, strapped me firmly down. They've fitted bolt down points throughout the yard for tis purpose. I've used several south coast yards but I'm really impressed with the attitude of the staff here.

OH DEAR WHAT's GOING ON HERE.
Is this to be the colour?

IMG_5710Medium.jpg

And later on, another forumite's boat gets ready for the plunge. Anyone recognise her?

IMG_5716Medium.jpg

So she gets the final touch up

`
IMG_5717Medium.jpg

And then back into the water for, hopefully, a great season.

Meanwhile, back on JW things are looking up on the colour front.

This is the new Velox treatment - I'm not holding my breath but I've just got to try this out before I make any judgements on antifouling sterngear. I havent yet found a bad report on this treatment - in fact all the comments that I've found have been very promising. IMO the biggest battle is to get something to stick - then it must be strong enough to resist the agressive growth in the Med waters.

As far as I'm concerned, the jury is officially now out on this matter.

Anyway, after a week's hard graft, here's the final result.

IMG_5728Medium.jpg

I've even managed to find the time to get her completely A Glazed so we are now ready for the Med sunshine.

This pic jus about shows the highly glossy finish that we've managed to get.

It just remains for me to keep my fingers crossed for good weather for our relaunch first thing on Monday morning.

Hi Mike, JW looks great. The growth in the bowthruster looked a bit terrifying - be interesting to keep an eye on that over the season and see how quickly it comes back. Maybe we need to build you a gizmo so that you can remote activate the thruster every now and then from the UK? Is the marina all wi-fi'd up now?

Cheers
Jimmy

Hi Mike, Looks like your getting ready!!! I have had a chat with my contacts here re your berth and no problem. when you confirm exact date I book you in and forward contact details of the head Marinero here in Mahon. still dont know if I will be here myself. Mr Bluesky hits the water in Poole Next week so things are realy gathering pace. One weeks testing then hand over. Then planned departure Poole mid May.

[/ QUOTE ]Actually the hull is not that bad. It's the undewater gear which is amazing.
Are you sure that they antifouled it at all? I suspect they didn't, or they did it very poorly.
In fact, the long trip could have removed the paint from props and rudders, but for what can be seen also both sides of the flaps and the two thrusters are in comparable conditions, whilst they should have been much less affected.

PS: not a boring post at all, pretty much the opposite. Thanks for sharing the experience and pics!

Wow - thats pretty bad fouling. Glad to see the end result looking so good - nicely done /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

ive seen less fouling on 300 yr old canons lifted from the briny !!!!!!! nice job on boat though............is that real blue sky or an artists impression???

Your right - the factory didnt put any paint on any of the metalwork - standard thing at Princess I believe. The big problem for me was that they didnt paint the thruster gearboxes/props either so they became inoperable almost immediatly.

Jimmy
What a great idea - maybe start the main engines as well!!!
Actually though, I'v found a very competant/experienced English guy working here in the marina and I'm going to get him to run the thrusters, engines and turn the props over regularly.
The WiFi has been working here since well before Xmas. Its reasonably quick but does have its glitches. I've got a VOIP service working to home over the Wifi but it can get poor especially during peak times. I even reregistered my Sky TV using it the other day. When we were own here in January, I was able to watch BBC TV using the WiFi and BBCiplayer but it is now a bit slow. Quality is OK - As you know I've linked the PC into all the TVs on board - its the speed thats the problem - I need to spend some more time on it but what I'd really like to do is get the BBCiPlayer downloadmanager working - it uses P2P and you could just leave it running with the idea of watching later.
The normal Sky stuff through the Sat domes is working though

Our return from Malta will be around the 15th/16th May - do you think that Mr Bluesky will be in Menorca by then?

There's an Ultrasonic installation/test on a Fairline Phantom (48ish I think) going on here at the moment - I think he is due to be lifted soon and I will be getting the results/photos on our marina forum so will share the results here on this forum.
I'm not sure how good the test will be though because the system has only been working over the winter months and the real test will be when the water warms up.

[/ QUOTE ]Last time I tried it, 'twas not available unless connected via a UK provider. Did they remove the restriction, or are you using some trick as a VPN connection to some UK-based server?

It appears the factory boys may have put on house paint!

You didn't want to try Prop-Speed on the underwater hardware? It works well in the tropical waters of Queensland (Aus)

Beautiful boat, you will be no doubt be looking forward to a great season ahead.

You use a UK Proxy server - www.ukproxyserver.co.uk for example but there is a way to do it for free - bit complicated though - see here http://hurwi.net/blog/?p=28

Velox was the only one that I could find that didnt have anything bad said about it when I googled. Even thee forums have bad things said about Prop Shield.

Yep - the acid job first - thanks to the Princess guys in Banus, the name here in Spain is Agua Fuerte. Still lots of hard work to getthe props clean though.
Thanks also to djefabs who gave me some flap wheels to fit my angle grinder. That did the final job - in fact too well - they were starting to shine so I stopped and got the sandpaper out to roughen them up in readiness for the primer (green stuff).

Mike plan is to depart Poole around mid May expecting to arive Mahon first few days of June weather permitting. Could hang out in Villa Mora or Sotogrande if weather is not good wait for good conditions for last run up the Med. Plan to depart for Sardinia and Corsica mid July then down to Malta. Then back to Mahon probably same route as you are taking out.

It seems that we will probably not see you on our return.
We will let you know what the facilities are like in Bizerte and any problems that we come accross.
I've been PM'ing Poweryacht in Malta and he has suggested berthing arrangements for me and seems that he is able to advise us in a simillar manner to the help you are offering. You know - the best restaurants etc.

The power of this forum is astonishing.

I'm sure that there will be a whole set of posts as we make our way out to Malta next month. The total crew out and back consists of no less than 6 forumites (either active boat owners or between boats) who all post on here regularly - all from the regular Wokingham meeting - its a kind of YBW Wokingham outing!!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Great post Mike! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Best of luck with the Malta trip - I know I can rely on you and the rest of the Wokingham crew to take and post lots. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
