Hi Guys new to the website and need a bit of info please. Ive got a bayliner and always used park and launch in pwllheli. We always fish off the boat and now we've become a little bit more serious... soooo with out much thought and knowledge ive now gone and hit buy iy now on ebay on a 28 footer fishing boat. I live near Wrexham and the boats up in Newcastle. Been up today to look at it and have fallen in love. I need to get it transported down to Anglesey (if anybody has got any recomendations that would be great) but thats not really a problem at mo... Im now wanting to wet moore it. This is where the problem starts. ive never done this before so i dont know where to start. All I do know is that i would like to be around the llandudno to molfre area (Best fishing im told) I dont want to pay through the nose and i really dont want to be ripped off. As i said i havnt got a clue where to start. can somebody please give me a run through on what i need to do and has anybody got any recomendations on where to go. Ive already got a little dingy to row out to the boat so thats not an issue.

Thanks in advance guys

Regards
A very lost Craig

Conwy marina is very good but not the cheapest place to be. You can only get out + or - 3 hours of high water but you can go up river a mile or two if its too rough to go out into the bay.

Hi Guys. Cheers for the info. I've been out for a drive today and fallen in love with Moelfre. Lovely little area and the Harbour masters wife was very pleasant. She's given me a price for wet mooring in their little alcove and I'm very happy with it.

Now for the next Problem.

She's told me to download the forms from Isle of Anglesey county councils website and fill them out and post them off. Now this afternoon I knew exactly what to do.. But now I'm confused once again. I can find the registration form for launching but nothing for mooring. But I can only download that in welsh and not English (Cant read Welsh I'm afraid)

Can somebody please point me in the right direction and help me out with a step by step guide for dummies

Cheers
Craig

Forget Holyhead or other marinas around the Straits.

Tom

Great advice, some upstart tried to punch me and scuffle with a bunch of friends back in the 80's in Hollyhead (or was it Valley?).. came boldering in to the chippy shouting English &$%!!!! or expletives to that effect and lamped the only welsh guy amongst us. Not the friendliest of places back then :(

prob...lot one of his velcro gloves..!!!

Moelfre is quite exposed to NW'ly gales, you will need strong tackle there. Check out the wreck of the Royal Charter! It. is not an accident that the lifeboat is based there. What about Amlwch? But personnally, if you can't dry out, I would go for the Straits S of Gallows point or as far as Menai Bridge. Much more sheltered & you have equal access to either end of the Straits. Even the Charter boats & professionals pick the SW or NE side of Anglesey depending on the weather, the waters are relatively shallow so the seas are short & steep & can be bloody uncomfortable at anchor.

Thanks Steve.

Cheers for that searush. Ive just come off the phone from John the harbour master and he's now told me that they have got a space at moelfre but my boat wont fit in it :( Ive just got a price for conwy and he's said for second hand chains, bouy and everything i need will cost me a £1000. Does that sound right?

Have to agree with searush OP. I know you have fallen in love with the place but do think long and hard. At very best a summer mooring only - you would never over winter there, But even in summer you would need to pick your times carefully for an overnight stay at anchor (or on your mooring). Even of you don't intend sleeping on board, you will lose many a fishing trip through not being able to safely to tender out to it.

Thanks Steve.

A swinging mooring in Conwy for a 32 footer cost me about £650 15 years ago so 1K probably about right, yes. Tidal window over the bar is a minor restraint but Conwy is a great base.

Am i right in thinking that a swinging mooring is chains and bouys? As you can tell im a complete novice at this mooring up jobby.

That was 30 years ago. Move on now. :D

Well it's a few year since I was in Conwy on a drying mooring laid by the HM & they supplied & maintained the lot but I paid about 800 quid a year for the priviledge. The river runs fast & can be dangerous in a small overloaded dinghy so I used to go aboard alone or with my adult son & shift the boat to the quayside for loading the gear & the girls.

My mooring at conwy was one of many risers off a long base chain with big anchors at each end. There was a large cylindrical foam covered metal bouy to support the riser & a small poly pick-up bouy on the end of a stout rope strop to connect to the bow cleat. I was responsible for the pick-up, strop & a swivel to connect it to the riser. It is wise to have 2 strops, one slightly longer (& thus not under strain) in case the main one chafes thro.

Conwy is usually pretty calm despite the current & is well sheltered by the sandbanks across the mouth of the river after half tide, but NW'ly gales over the ebb can give a few nasty hours until the sandbanks uncover. The view of the illuminated castle is superb at night.

I imagine it was the infamous "Globe" chippy; on the route back from town to the station, Morawelon and other council estates. Avoided close to pub closing time by most locals with any sense of self preservation and that's not because of the food ! Still, one local toerag got his come uppance in the very late 1970s when I came home one weekend from University with some friends. He tried it on with the "English" and ended up with some missing teeth and what looked like a broken or dislocated jaw; no, it wasn't me, but a friend whose evening job was as a bouncer in Liverpool!

The best place to be in and around Anglesey is the Menai Strait for what you seem to want
Fishing and feckin about
Cos thats what its all about!

Well ive been going around in circles! I gave up in the end and went back to where i know and can afford at the moment. Decided on Porthmadog. Next year we'll go up to anglesey.

Thanks for all the help and info guys

The Menia Straits is only. Short day cruise from PMDog, jeeze even Kwacker has been that far ;)

There is a thread somewhere about a meeting in Porth din doodle in July that's got to be on your list for the Summer.

Don't miss out on Anglesey, it can be difficult but in the right conditions it has some great cruising.

Tom.

i agree entirely; when the conditions are good, the variety for boating is outstanding.

When they are not good, well, there are some very nice walks (and even some nice real beer to be had nowadays !)
