Android Tablets at Maplins

Forumites might find it useful to know Maplins are selling tablet computers with reputed fast processors
Dual Core from £99.99
Quad Core from £139.99

Don't have one so don't know if they are any good.
No connection etc.

The specs look like every other generic android tablet. As usual for Maplins the price is at the top of the range for the spec, but I guess you have to factor in the convenience and ease of return if anything should go wrong.

I think Argos sell the same brand, probably cheaper, and even easier to return.
 
I know that Tesco will probably be short of tablets but please note that the Maplin 7" model is quite low spec. (though only £70).
Even the £99 model has a much poorer spec. than the HUDL

Lower resolution
Half memory
No GPS
No Bluetooth
Slower CPU
No front camera
etc.

I noticed that CPC (http://cpc.farnell.com) were also selling low cost tablets. I think there's a chance that they'll be cheaper than Maplin for similar specification.

I'm happy with the HUDL I bought using ~£60 vouchers doubled up. Also bought food online with £15 voucher less delivery to save another £11.50 and some clothes online at 25% off & less yet another £5 voucher. Tesco almost paid me to take the HUDL as I was going to buy the discounted stuff anyway.

I was going to buy a small media-player (or Rasperry Pi configured for this task) for use on my boat. However, HUDL undercut both alternatives and was a no-brainer. I bought early as I did expect Tesco to sell out before Christmas.

Out of interest, do these things only work (internet) with wifi, or is there the possibility of using a Sim data card?
 
Yes, you just need to find a tablet with a SIM slot for 2G/3G. I had no interest in this so can't comment on available models. I imagine they will be higher cost than HUDL and similar. I saw some on sale in USA with this feature so imagine that they'll become common fairly soon. Also noticed that the Maplin £160 model has a SIM slot. That means there will almost certainly be cheaper ones available from other suppliers such as CPC.

Some people must spend quite a lot in TESCO ;) (I guess not everyone is lucky enough to have ALL the major supermarkets within a few miles; +LIDL, ALDI).

Seriously, I do like the HUDL specs (and price) .... but for me it needs to be 10 inch. Are their any rumors of a bigger version?

We are within 1 mile of Tesco and that makes it convenient for some monthly shopping, so happy coincidence that they sell HUDLs.

I haven't heard rumours of a 10" model and there could be one on the way, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Just my opinion:

1) Christmas/ New year is the big sales opportunity of the year
2) I'm pretty certain that Tesco are going to sell all the HUDLs they can get into stock (plus a few more)
3) It's getting a bit late to announce a 10" model pre-Christmas

So I'm rather doubtful that Tesco would bring out a 10" model when their manufacturer is likely to struggle to make enough 7" model. If Tesco do bring out a 10" model then I'd be surprised to see it in next 2 months. Pure guesswork on my part.
 
I don't think Tesco have any plans for a 10" Hudl, but they are very responsive to customer requirements, so anything's possible. However, the tablet market seems to be concentrated on the 7"/8" size, which many people find the most convenient and portable for everyday use. I love my Nexus 7, and have to say it works brilliantly and seamlessly, (and with no extra Tesco-branded content).

I couldn't see the point of rooting mine just to remove Tesco stuff. Easy enough to simply remove all visible Tesco stuff apart from the "T" (though clicking it does nothing on mine now). Just a matter of disabling the Tesco content.

Good point about 7"-8" size, I think that's spot on and probably why Tesco chose that size rather than 10".

I haven't bothered to compare it with anything else as there was nothing with a comparable price tag. I'm certain that there are better units out there (e.g. GPS isn't great). However, unbeatable value if you buy with £60 of vouchers (boosted to £120) and manage to use £20 vouchers from the box on items you'd buy from Tesco anyway.

No surprise that I expect Tesco to run out before Christmas. Of course they might have got forecasting right and have huge stocks rolling in. :D

HUDL's very good even without any discounts, but it won't run the old Europe West Navionics that I have on my phone, could be because the android version is specific to Tescos? but still very good at what it does, best point is it has an SD slot to give 40Gb storage.
 
Just bought (yet another) Samsung Tab 3 from Tesco for £99. It is on discount to £119 and clubcard owners received a code for another £20 off. Free delivery next-day.

At that price, no brainer as Samsung spec is top of the range, except 3/4G which universally require another £100 or so.
