Hi all, just wondering if there are any decent apps that will give accurate positioning of lat & long.? Just to pin point where one is exactly off the east coast of Scotland.? Regards Alan

Just bought the Navionics app which comes with full UK charts. £17 or so for the full suite. I was impressed until I showed it to a friend who works for a civil engineering contractor specialising in marine works. Of the last 6 projects that he has worked on around Scotland since 2004, only 2 piers/breakwaters/slipways are shown. Maybe these aren't shown on the Admiralty charts yet, I don't know, but it made me a little less smug.
For measuring distances, passage planning and the like, very good value for money.

GPS test from Market (should be preloaded in all programs) does this.
Quite usefull and free.

My missus's HTC came with a widget (straight out of the box) which displays Lat/Long. Can't remember what it was called, shouldn't be too difficult to find. Obviously if you then want this displayed on a map you will need to get an app such as the Navionics one, or the google maps app for land based display.

Presumably the icon for signal strength goes to zero bars and the internal GPS carries on working and displaying Lat/Long or your position on the built in charts?

SailDroid - free on the Android market gives a very simple output of position and speed from gps.
Also turn on the "satellite" layer in the google maps application. This then displays the satellite imagery from google earth. Click 'my location' and it will show you where you are. Doesn't show you what is under the blue though.
Other apps:
MarineTraffic.com - free app shows AIS shipping data. Can't see myself using this along the coast - needs to be in range of mobile network, but I like to look at it while couchsurfing at home.
Navionics - paid app - I have the UK/Holland charts - handy for looking at all the place you'd like to get to but probably won't!
