Now call it a mid life crisis if you like, but I've a hankering to go flying. Nothing to ambitious so I looked at these microlight things. Lessons er well take a remortgage to cover those, were talking £200 an hour. The school reckons about 60 hrs before you go solo. Then theres the PPL. The sylibus is erm...comprehensive to say the least. Then there's buying, running and keeping the thing, mad costs.

So next time some one moans about the costs of runing and keeping a boat, go take a look at aircraft. I now know how lucky I am to have started boating first!!!!

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

£200's AN HOUR!!!
Go accross to the states or out to the UAE, fuel is no object, so you can do the whole course, with accomodation e.t.c in 2-3 weeks for £5,000 to £6,000.

Try Gliding, its much cheaper and quieter too, not to mention a serious rush. There are clubs all over the place and they all give trial flights. they reckon that if you can drive a car then you can fly a glider. the whole thing has a nice club based feel to it as well everyone mucks in and helps out which helps to keep the costs down.

£200 an hour! Are you sure you didn't pick up the helicopter price list. And if it takes 60 hours to go solo either you should be anywhere near the controls of an aircraft or they are seriously bad at instructing.

It took me seven hours to go solo, but I was a lot younger then and most of my brain was still in working order, but 60 hours!

You could try:

Avon Microlite Club & Flying Tuition,The Control Tower, Long Marston Airfield - Tel: 01789 263999

http://members.aol.com/fsportavia/

They do trial flights for 30 mins £49 which may be promising compared to £200/h and it looks like the sell the planes too.

Maybe you should just attach a parachute to your motor boat - a lot cheaper and almost as frightening?
