Re: Thank you; very interesting and logical

patents dont last forever, also you dont have to change anything very much to get past patent infringement, also are all the anchors patented worldwide? I doubt that very much, it takes a huge amount of money and time to do that, I know, I've been there and lost the tee shirt!

Re: Checking anchors

You're perhaps not aware I'm based in the Adriatic. 'Checking the anchor' is often an excuse for a very pleasant dip. I suspect I would be less conscientious in the Channel!

Re: Checking anchors

Dive down and check !!!

I am currently moored on the Tyne in NE England, The Sewage boat Bran Sands is at the jetty 300 metres away. It is not just the cold that I care about.

Re: Checking anchors

Aah yes, that would make a difference. It's not so inviting in in the muddy waters of the Thames estuary.
I'm not jealous at all though.

Re: Checking anchors

What a dreadful picture you paint: the sun over anywhere sounds terribly early in the day, and fishing or putting on teeshirts sounds like work. I think I'd better have another cool drink!

Re: Thank you; very interesting and logical

You are perfectly right Mirelle.. but patenting a product is not that easy.. it has to be something very NEW..

And your patent is only valid for 20 years.. all these patents, CQR, Bruce, Delta .. are now in the public domain and everybody can freely copy them.

When introducing a brand new product on the Market, to beat the competition
you can argue on better characteristics.. due to different designs..

But when introducing a "ME TOO" product, the only way to beat the competition is to have a much cheaper price.. Then my question: How would it be possible to have a product with the same (or Better) characteristics.. if this product is much cheaper??

As Usual, You will get what you paid for..

Re: Thank you; very interesting and logical

But doesn't that fly in that face of evolution of products ?

The very PC you are typing on probably cost a darn sight less than the PC you first bought many moons ago ? And I bet its a darn bet better.

So how can we paste the product world with a statement cheaper but not better on all things ????

There are many claims by various that their anchor design is better than anothers ...... most of the later designs advertised and RECC'D by many here ARE cheaper than the old established CQR's etc. So they are not better ????? I don't know and I wouldn't dare say which is either - it depends on too many things .... sea bed, current, windage, angle of ..... OOPS !!! WE wont go down this road again ....

But you know what I mean ........

<Then my question: How would it be possible to have a product with the same (or Better)>

Easy. A copy doesn't have to pay for development costs, or the advertising costs associated with getting the anchor accepted by the public. I'd imagine these are a large part of the cost of an anchor.

But after 20 years, when the patent runs out, these costs should have been paid off, and so the anchor's price should have been reduced. However, neither the CQR or bruce seemed to do this. So many of the copies aren't cheap, they're a sensible price, and its the originals that are overpriced. After all, a typical anchor's hardly a complicated lump of metal to manufacture.

spot on re cost price , think you will find plastimo wholesale the 7.5kg claw around the 16 quid mark to the retail outlets - and much of that must be shipping!
note I am not saying we are being ripped off - this is no doubt normal.
