Anchors in Balearics

can be a problem as CQRs tend to lay on their side on the hard sand & fool skippers into believing they're attached. After 2 seasons experience of this we are convinced that we should get a more effective anchor. There's a good article on the subject in July 99 PBO. recommending the Spade anchor, and Nigel Calder also mentioned them recently. theyre expensive, & before I pay out I wonder whether anyone has practical experience of them, or an alternative that works.

We spent a couple of years cruising the Balierics and wintered in Andrax in '96' in our Westerly Longbow 'Deep Water'. During all that time we found our Bruce to be the best allrounder. We were using her when the Mini Hurricanes hit in Sept 96 in Andrax, Mallorcja and she held while all around were dragging, until someone dragged across our chain and lifted us. Others will no doubt disagree but it all comes down to personal choice. For me the Bruce beats the Danforth, Plough and CQR hands down. Just go one up on the recomended weight.
