Like, I mean, y'know, why bother?

When there are lots of perfectly good marinas every few miles..... with crowded restaurants and disco-bars, and 'interesting' 'lecky power outlets at every berth, yellow cables snaking everywhere, and nearly-fresh water on tap, and industrial wheely bins next door for one's 'poubelles', and polystyrene food trays floating by, and late-night/early-morning generators, screaming kids, and death-wish incompetent manoeuvring by chavs to keep the interest and the adrenalin high, and others' yappy dogs fouling the walkway, and the occasional 'domestic dispute' on a neighbouring Broom, and the periodic 'lurch/roll/heave/crunch' as the 17-y.o. Berthing Master surges by yet again in his 80h.p. RIB at 20 knots, radio crackling at full vol.....

Instead of alone in a remote pool, with just the seabirds and the sunset for company, and one's own well-worn quiet music for background, the rustic aroma of truly-fresh fish grilling, only some chilled Muscadet .... and the long near-silence, with just the 'shushing' of a low swell on the rocks.

Who would want to be stuck with that? Can't see the point, myself.

I wouldn't encourage peeps to go anchoring.......

;)

Umm, it's a difficult choice isn't it? I personally can't stand the wet hand I get pulling my bag of beers from the briney where it stays cool. How I miss the lecky on tap.

agreed -

The crowds -

And the noise from the council estate -

completely ruined our holiday.

Anchorages! where are they all?

I much prefer anchoring to a Marina.

But, am I missing anything. There seem to be precious few good anchorages to over night in along the South Coast. I have often used East Head, Osbourne Bay, Newtown Creek, Studland, Poole Harbour, Lulworth Cove, River Dart and a few more but there must be others I have missed despite having been at it for many many years.

Would any one care to add to this list to provide a complete list of South Coast Anchorages with some info on each? Say Ramsgate to Helford.

Just starting into singlehanding so finding anchorages more interesting than ever they were before.

Here are a couple

and I have lots (well, a couple of dozen) more. When I ran the Woodbridge Cruising Club website I co-ordinated the Memebrs' Favorite Anchorage scheme but it seems to have disappeared when I stopped doing the site. I did get permission from the contributors to publish the pieces elsewhere before it all stopped.

Would there be interest in a co-operative anchorage swapping site?

Can I point you to the link at the bottom of my signature??? Thence you will find a list and description of some of the best anchorages in the west country.... please feel free to contribute as well!

Some forumites have very kindly been placing some anchorage information in there... though progress as of late has been slow... due I suspect to all of us being on holiday!

Well Bilbobaggins is of course correct. Anchoring should have become obsolete years ago, along with RDF navigation, lighthouse-keepers, hemp ropes and boiled linseed oil. It won't be too long before H&S puts a stop to this heinous activity  And...do we even think what anchoring might be doing to the shareholders of the marina companies in these tough economic times? It's a scandal. I blame Gordon Brown...he should have legislated on this years ago.

In the meanwhile Messrs. Rocna and Manson try to fool us it's safe to put our hooks back in the water, when as we all know no self-respecting CQR owner would even dream of using his for other than a garden ornament.

Whoops, sorry, got to go...my new anchor has just arrived.:D

Tell people where the good anchorages are? You must be mad! It's like fishermen telling peeps where the best spots are.

Half the fun of anchoring is going to places where no one has been for yonks or ever. I once saw a yacht anchored in North Channel to the west of Hurst. I've never seen anybody there before or since but it works when there is no or northerly winds.

Excellent tip... I'll just make a note in my little book of anchoring.....

How do you add new ones, it seems straightforward enough to add comments to ones already listed but I can't seem to add a new one (I'm never much good at webpage instructions - got in a right pickle when this forum changed).

Just wait till all the stinckies go home to their marinas - and quiet descends........

And don't forget having to get up in the middle of the night to leave the anchorage in the peeing rain because the wind has increased and backed 120 degrees from the forecast to the only direction the bay isn't sheltered from!!
Meant we went under the Store Baelt bridge a bit earlier than originally planned, but still pretty spectacular..
