Anchoring is rarely an option on the Thames due to various issues.

Would you care to expand on that, Byron?

When the river is not flowing anchoring in the weir stream at some locks can be very pleasant and well out of the way of any traffic.

There are some places where my draft prevents bankside mooring where anchoring could also be an option.

In practice I tend not to as we always have the dog with us so much more convenient to moor up.

No problems with anchoring so long as you are not obstructing the main traffic flow and there are no underwater obstructions.
I only use it as a last alternative as the mud and muck dredged up makes rather a mess.
I also occassionally use the anchor as a 'bow mooring' and tie the stern to a convenient tree, or vice versa with a small kedge anchor.

There are so few places other than weir streams and there one cannot leave the craft unattended. In other places passing steamers cause drag as can larger cruisers. I just feel that where-ever an anchor is dropped an anchor watch must be maintained at all time.

Went to Laleham last weekend and saw a boat at anchor just past the M3 bridge, and was still there when we cam back on Sunday. Looked nice and peaceful really, despite a bit of motorway noise, although no anchor ball showing, but no real surprise there.
