anchoring places in south croatia

The boat is listed as 2.4m beam, max towing width in UK is 2.5m

[/ QUOTE ]Aha! That's more reasonable compared to what I just read from AndieMac.
12' with no escort sounds amazing. Only in Australia, I suppose...!
And to answer him, Italian limits (again, not sure if they're common to the whole EU) are:
up to 2.5 m no problem;
up to 3.5 m no escort but only with drivers/trucks authorized to special transport;
above 3.5 m to be submitted for approval in advance, and always with escort.

PS: James, I love your "is listed as 2.4m beam": considering that the 263 has a 8'6" beam, something was lost in translation I reckon... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hi Mapis,

I see your point, the boat is actually 2.59m metric width when converted from the US specification of 8ft 6".

I have checked the National Trailer and Towing Association website in the UK, from what I can see the max width of a trailer for towing vehicles up to 3500kg gross vehicle weight is actually 2.3m.

It goes on to say that that "loads must not project more than 305mm either side of the trailer up to a maximum width of 2.9m"

Yes i think that's right James. The max width limit is for the TRAILER. Different rules apply to the LOAD. Daft innit? And we pay politicians to enact these crazy laws. ho hum. :-)

[/ QUOTE ]Now that's a weird way to define rules, why not simply state max 2.9?
Good to know that you're fine with your trailer, anyhow.

Whoops! I received a phone call while writing my reply, and didn't see your post beforehand.
A clear cut case of "great minds think alike".... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

agree,
this is the rule in all central europe country's,
although I believe from 3m beam (not 3.5m) you need approval and escort.

my actual boat has 2.6m beam
my previous boat was 2.67
but I never applied for that authorisation (+2.5)
I took the risc, as I never expected somebody to really measure the boat, its only a very small part that is +2.5
in fact you need that authorisation from every country you drive through.

and regarding Corsica and Sardinia,
are you sure the wine is OK over there ? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi James,
very nice setup, and very nice boat, but you must also be on the edge of the weight limit 3.5T, as I see your boat is well equipped with many extra's.
And the ML is spec'd only 3T isn't it ? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

[/ QUOTE ]Agreed. Just be aware that (as I'm told - no first hand experience) in some custom offices at the Country borders they have a sort of "mask" you can be asked to drive through (there's in fact also a height limit, though I can't remember it), and also a scale to check the weights.
If the trailer doesn't fit the limits, you risk to be sent back.

Re. French and Italian wines, no problem mate. Tried and tested first hand!

Hi Bart, I am unsure of the total weight, I should really get onto a weighbridge with it. The only specs that I could get forn the boat was a dry weight with the base motor from the manufacturer, not my boat.
I make sure she is empty of fuel and gear when I tow, it was not much fun with the ML but with the GL it is much better, you still know it's there though!
How are you finding the GL, any problems, I have had a few electrial issues, all fixed now?

Corsican wine is wonderful BartW. Worth stocking up the car with several cases, as I did last year, though I am on dangerously low stock levels now

my car and the trailer are over its max weight as you could read,
but I will keep it mind /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The car is nice - the boat is nicer but the reg gets me every time Jim /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

absolutely no doubts about Italian nor French wine,

only worried about the local island wines,
but now that JFM gave his approval I am assured there is no risk . /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

James,
Oooph, Only now I noticed its a GL on your pictures, black makes it look maller, thought it was a new model ML. The boat took all my attention /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

With my old ML I have had severe problems with the automatic clutch and some dampers on the crancshaft.
Therefor we upgraded to GL 2 years ago

I am very happy with the GL, enough power for towing, very nice ride; air suspension, smooth automatic gear, I really like that car.
But I also had some issues,
- with the software of the Radio, CD, GPS, Phone,
- one of the balloons of the air suspension exploded
- and this year after two seasons, they also had to replace some major parts in the automatic clutch.
(I tow 4Tons about 10.000km / season)
but all issues were repaired under warrenty, and luckyly I was never stucked at a place.

About The clutch problem,
I noticed only a very small vibration while gear switches, so I asked the maintenance guy's to give her a serious inspection, and only then they discovered apparently a major problem, but all this was repaired under warranty.
So now I am a little worried for the future when the car is older and warranty is over.
But for the moment, I don't want another make nor model.
SWMBO jokes that my next car will be a truck !

about the weight,
its amazing how much we are over the calculated dryweight, (I calculated roughly 3.3T) so after being on a weighbridge, I made a list of all extra bits and pieces, and now I have discovered where the 3850kg for the empty boat + trailer comes from.
Try to make a complete list of all the extras with their weights ! I was surprised !

about the road behaviour,
The trailer is ballanced so that there is good weight on the tow hook (130kg). To my experience this has a very positive effect on the road behaviour. At least in this combination with the air suspension.
With my old combination (ML+old trailer) I had only 80kg, and behaviour was a lot less good

perhaps they are photo shop'ed to remain unknown for the forum /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mapis... an escort is only required on 'tortorous routes' (continuous sets of hard hairpin corners), otherwise, off you go.
Bearing in mind we are talking about a country that has the population of a Eurpean city, not too many cars (or boats) on our roads!

Bart... what about the stone chips?

Bart... what about the stone chips?

[/ QUOTE ]

In fact I never had a problem with this, I never saw a scratch from a stone chip, Even with my very first Rib, never had a scratch, I am not sure why not,

perhaps:
- I only make speed at motor way's, there are very few stones on these roads
- quality / type of tires on the car
- length / postion of the trailer
In fact I never saw / heard collegues complaining about this
really no idea

perhaps you could put a new post about this topic

I don't think the Brits tow like you and I do, although I don't think anyone tows like Bart!!!

To control 4 tonnes with a car over those sort of distances speaks volumes for both your driving skills and the vehicle you are driving.

It maybe the local cheap-skate road building techniques over here, that leave the small stones that cause damage. Also possibly the weirdly obsessive boat owner /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Many Years ago I have driven a Big truck with a trailer a couple of times;
I put my mind on that; " massive weight - driving slow"
Truck drivers do that day in day out.
and then its all very easy.

And the reward you get when arriving in new water with the boat is really worth the effort
/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Here here! You're playing my song Bart! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just because this post has diverted in so many directions already, just one more. You mentioned on a different thread about the air-compressor story, did I get you right, that you have one for the boat?

Do you mean for general maintainance at home, or have you found a use for it when you go cruising? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
I didn't quite understand!
