Is anchoring in Fishcombe Bay or Churston Cove a viable idea assuming the winds are right? My chart does not show many anchorages in the coast up to Teighmouth - are there any to be recommended?

Anchored in Fishcombe Bay at the moment. Navionics shows most of Torbay as an Anchorage. Ansteys Cove and Babacombe bay were recommended to me but not tried them. There are 4 visitors buoys in Fishcombe Bay but only suitable by the look of it for small mobo or small bilge keelers. Hope that helps

Torbay used to be a fleet anchorage during the Napoleonic wars, according to H Hornblower RN, used when conditions got too grim on the Brest blockade. I guess it's OK for your AWB.

Brixham
Anchorage: Do not anchor in the fairway, or close under the breakwater, as this is an unmarked fairway for the lifeboat.
In offshore winds, a better bet is to anchor in Fishcombe Cove, immediately W of the outer harbour. This pleasant spot features good holding ground for one or two yachts, a small stony beach, toilets and a grand little cafe. Its perfect sylvanian aspect has recently been despoiled by the Planners of England who have permitted a somewhat inappropriate development up in the woods, but it is still comparatively pretty and its lack of dues will appeal to yachtsmen of straitened circumstances with proper ground tackle who have been stiffed by MDL at the marina.

Torquay
Anchorage: Sailors more interested in historical authenticity than luxury may choose to anchor outside in westerly weather. The holding is good off Princess Pier in at least 3.6m and, indeed, in many other places in Torbay. Don’t be put off by the lack of neighbouring anchored yachts. It’s a big place. Many seem to prefer being fleeced in the marinas and in any case, you are in good company with the ghosts of Nelson’s navy.

I have anchored at the latter - if you ask nicely the Royal Yacht Club will allow you to use their showers and bar. In the middle of the night I was visited by a dolphin who played with my anchor chain for a couple of hours.

Anstey's Cove north of Torquay is a lovely spot. The next bay up (Babacombe) also offers a little more northerly shelter if things go slightly NE but isn't as pretty. Nice walk along the cliffs.

Hi, We used a Fishcombe cove buoy 2 weeks ago. It was marked 6 tonnes - we are 6 tons but conditions were benign. They are to protect sea grass damage from anchors but it’s voluntary if you want to use your own ground tackle. The buoys are excitingly close to the rocky shore. We were happy because conditions were calm. You may get some wash from fishing boats which operate 24/7 but not excessive. Any winds with east in it are uncomfortable in Torbay.
