We're currently at anchor in Cala Teulera in Mahon, which up until now has been the only anchorage available in the inlet. As of 1 July, the port authority has deeclared that the anchorage is only available if all the paid for moorings in the port are full or there is adverse weather. There is also a time limit of 3 days maximum stay if the above conditions are met.
This is clearly intended to maximise the business of the companies who hold the franchise for operting the various marinas in the port. We've decided that if they're going to be so unfriendly and grasping, then we'll take our money go elsewhere. We won't be returning to Mahon until they get their act together and be a little more freindly to those of us who don't want to pay silly levels of marina fees.

Okay that answers my original question then! We were about to set off when we received a phone call. Never relying on just one persons word :( We returned to port to a) do some research and b) to take stock.

I have 'phoned a couple of people we know on the island and they have confirmed what you say. Reading your post is the final straw! I have also spoken to a guy at the Sunseeker quay to get a price --- Want a huge belly laugh --
sailing yacht 12.64mtr x 4.06mtr - 139.12 euros per day. Oh, but it does include water & electricity!!!!!

The very sad thing is we wrote about Menorca's death wish last year and it continues. We have many friends on the island, mostly in business, shops and restaurants, they were hurting badly last year, who knows if they can continue. According to the latest figures tourism is very much down even on last years numbers.

We can only pray that the powers that be end up with egg on their faces. Hopefully it will happen sooner rather than later as it is their fellow countrymen & women who will be the first to fall.

I fear this started some time ago. My son lived in Mallorca for some years and speaks good Spanish. Around 5/6 years ago the Balearic authorities began implementing a policy called 'quality tourism', which basically means no Kiss-me quick hats, fish and chips or cheap package holidays, but concentration on those in private jets, superyachts and large villa rentals. Providers were encouraged to increase rates to squeeze out the unwanted holidaymakers. Looks like it has taken off big-time. Let's hope that, as has happened in Greece, the locals realise they are losing money and get the policy changed.

Yep, saw that when we visited on our way to Greece, so we just "splashed and dashed" the western meddy has had it for us, such a difference it quality and service in Corfu. Why they insist on driving us all out is just beyond me, they dont have any quality of service to offer anybody, never mind "super yachts"

reading that i was a bit shocked i knew it was comming that they are charging for anchorages on the moring bouys in fornells this year as well but in the new RCC Pilot book from Islas Baleares shows many anchorages. I am living on my boat in Mallorca and sail to Menorca many times been twice this year, but don't let that put anybody off to go and see an island which is very nice, plenty of places to stop and enjoy. we do. if anybody wants help about an anchorage buy that book or pm me maybe i can help.

Remember the "boat tax" in Sardinia. It was deeply unpopular and cost 3million to collect 500 thousand€. It has now gone.
I think that elsewhere (Mallorca and Minorca) once they find out that their current strategy is counterproductive they may change their tune.
I believe that super - yachts spend very little money ashore as they are very self sufficient so only the marinas will get a financial benefit.
