Anchorages in the Balearics

I have a general ecology filter in my drinking water line, it takes out everything, great, no need to hump bottled water. Especially for my tea!

Does it take out dissolved solids? We have a bog-standard charcoal filter which, although it improved the taste, probably didn't take minerals out. This was a problem for a friend with a heart condition, he was warned not to drink any tap water because of this and had to buy bottled stuff.

We also have a General Ecology filter and I second Colin's recommendation. We never buy bottled water anywhere. Incidentally, we find that watermaker water, filtered by the GE filter is the nicest water we have ever drunk (contrary to folklore). You can find all the tech details on their website http://www.generalecologyeurope.com/contact.html but the answer to your question is that the GE filter contains a very fine filter that removes all solids to a very low particulate size (below bacteria and all known pathogens). It also has charcoal to absorb tastes, odours and certain toxic chemicals. It will not remove poisons that are in solution such as mercury salts in solution. Neither does it remove dissolved minerals or soften the water so it is not like a water softener that exchanges calcium for sodium ions.

I have never yet met anyone who is less than 100% delighted with their GE filter.

By the way, buy the spares and bits from the UK distributor who is first class; I had better not comment on the Spanish distributor (who is also a Brit) as I would like this post to appear in the forum unedited! A fact that the UK distributor is well aware of and he will ship direct to Spain.

Interesting to hear about the local water.....and the solution! Not sure what filter the boat we are doing the trip on has, but it's got me thinking I should ditch my charcoal filter and buy an general ecology one for my own boat in time for our summer trip to Norway this year.

Keep the comments coming guys - and the links to all your great web sites/blogs.

It takes out everything, bacteria, cryptosporidia, chlorine, etc. etc. It's charcoal and silver and .....well, things!! type filter, dont know exactly, but it's excellent.
I have no connection with the company, just a satisfied customer.
The filters are quite expensive, but last a long time and very much cheaper than bottled water. They say you can put river water through it, but it would clog the filter quite quickly, I guess.
Check them out, General ecology.
The kit even come with it's own tap.

Did you get a reply?

I wanted to add, for the sake of newcomers to the Med, not for your information, that in this part of the world it is not uncommon to be offered non-potable water. It is widely used for washing down and toilet flushing. I was once told that it comes from desalinators that are allowed to pass quite high salt levels but I don't know the truth of that. Certainly taste the water from unknown sources before filling your tank (the tip of the tongue has the salt receptors, no need to swallow!)
