Jonathan, I know that you have an obsession with smaller and lighter, but the OP is asking about electrics, and you have no idea of the size of his chain.
You could always start a new thread on your obsession. 🙄
Norman and Paul,

It seemed that you both have similar ideas. Your chain needs replacing - so you off and buy new chain. Or you need new batteries - and ignore the opportunities offered.

There is an alternative way of thinking and that is about planning ahead. Importantly your rode is made up of a number of 'big number' purchases and these purchases need to be compatible with each other. The chain, needs to match the gypsy, windlass, yacht (and its battery bank(s))

Instead of rushing off and buying your new chain you might find it advantageous to delay buying new chain (regalvanise instead) and then plan your purchasers so that you take advantage of the ability to down size windlass, chain anchor and batteries.

Windlass are robust but don't last for ever, you can use a better, smaller, anchor. You can use a smaller chain and this might mean you can use a smaller windlass which means a smaller power requirement.

So....

Instead of replacing the oversized lead batteries and the over size chain that you inherited when you bought the, second, or fourth, hand yacht

Think outside the box.

Yes - you need new batteries and new chain (or regalvanised chain) but the rode is one compatible unit. Spread you thinking to consider the whole rode not one part.

Obviously both you and Paul are not interested in lateral thinking - no problem, others might have different ideas.

I simply offer an alternative way of thinking - I accept people don't 'think outside the box'; don't believe in Lateral Thinking - I just offer an alternative. Most will, like you both, reject the idea - some might think....

I'll do this when I retire....

You would be surprised at the number of people who have accepted the concept of down sizing chain... Owner of a 40' aluminium yacht and owner/director of one of Australia's biggest builder of police/rescue, commercial/leisure motor boat builders, 2 circumnavigating yachts (one a member of YBW - guess where he learnt about smaller chain :) ), Trimaran owner cruising Pacific Islands, Multihull builder Thailand.... I am not alone. These owners were not motivated by battery replacement but by yacht 'efficiency'. They all accept the need for a new gypsy (which in effect meant a new windlass). Not everyone thinks like you.

With a few more converts - maybe I should 'go commercial' advertise, Strat charging - but then I'd have to retire from YBW

I'm happy to provide a little, nagging, spark. :). Most people read of my ideas, some hear of me through the grape vine - I don't care - I just offer another option. Most people will put me on 'ignore' - but you are a glutton for punishment and obviously read everything I post. :)

And I'm grateful to you - you offer me the opportunity to promote my ideas - yet again :( . I don't need to start a new thread - just use opportunity to feed into an active thread.

I'm sorry if I've (again) touched a raw nerve. 😄

Not at all, its good to hear the views of others. If people spend good money following my comments - and don't subsequently have problems - it re-assures me and ensures my nerves are fully relaxed.

When, and why, did you think you had touched a raw nerve?

Why have you included me in this nonsense ?

I've steered well clear of any chain/anchor comments and stuck to the subject matter of the thread, windlass batteries.

But we all know you cannot help yourself with your chain and anchor tomes.
