Anchor Winch

I quite fancy the idea of fitting an electric anchor winch to our boat, mainly because even when there are others on board i tend to handle everything myself (smallish kids and non boaty SWMBO (apart from sipping drinks and sunbathing that is))

Is this overkill on a 23ft boat? will the weight of chain cause problems? we are talking about a 23ft Draco here so not the lightest boat around so I don't think the extra weight would be significant might even help get on the plane quicker.

any one with any experience of such gadgets?

I have a Lofrans winch on my Sealine S24. Wouldn't be without it. I dont have to hang over the bow, straining like made to unset it, I just motor ahead slowly, taking up the slack, and it unset's itself without me putting my whisky tumbler down!

Dont understand. The amout of chain will not differ. Less your using rope now. But should'nt. Anchor winches are excellent and save alot of hassle. But not cheap. Also look at whether your anchor locker is suitable.

Dead right, If you try to put too much chain in a small loker, it bunches up and jams the winch......
Followed by cursing and going forward, lifting hatch & pulling it all out.
Totally blows the cool image

Yep we're using rope, with about 10m chain. I think the locker will be alright there's plenty of room plus of course the anchor goes in there ATM. If necessary I can make a new locker hatch.

I think I'll start to look around and see what sort of prices are available.

Yeah got one on mine come have a look next time your down the pontoon. Next time I see Ian struggling with the anchor I will use my windlass in front of him just to get the point across /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Depending on the usage of your boat, you might find it convenient to keep the chain+rope arrangement.
For a 23 footer, I'd suggest <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.lofrans.com/english/SALPAANCORE/marlin.html> Lofrans' Marlin</A>, which can handle both.
