Having just bought a 20 foot fishing boat with a draft of 3 feet can any one tell me what weight of anchor i need also the chain lenght and warp lenght, i know there can be no hard and fast rule but i have had so many conflicting stories.
I will be anchoring off the suffolk/essex coast in about 30 feet of water.

Depends on the weight of your boat, also what sort of anchor and what sort of ground you'll be anchoring in.

I'd have thought a 15lb anchor (Danforth, Bruce, CQR etc) with around 20ft of 5/16ths chain and 150ft of 12mm warp.

I tend to err on the heavy side personally, if you've got a windlass I'd go 25lb anchor, 50ft of chain and 200ft of 14mm anchorplait.

Thanks for the advice Peter i do not have a windlass but i have been given a 12kg spade anchor and will try the chain and warp you recommended maybe not 200 feet as space is at a premium but the 12 kg anchor does not feel so heavy probably will at sea

cheers ken

25lb anchor and a modicum of chain will certainly give you a work out in deeper water. If you don't have a windlass get a pair of rubberised work gloves to give you some protection from the skin stripping effect of rope and chain.

Check out www.jimmygreen.co.uk where they have a chart that gives you anchor type v. boat length v. chain/rope combinations.

Also decent prices.

Best regards )

Go for a 15lb CQR with a good length of chain - say 50' x ¼" chain and ½" warp, say 150'. Have a 2nd anchor as well on say 25' x ¼" chain with 150' of ½" warp - Oh, by the way I have a 10lb genuine CQR for sale at £10 - I'm in suffolk so PM me
