Anchor size OK?

I have been meaning to upgrade my anchor from my CQR copy and was going to get a Mason supreme 11KG but a boat few slips down from me kindly offered me their old Delta 10KG for basically nothing. (Exchange of skills - i did some work on their boat they were unable to complete) and there is nothing wrong with it other than the galv is a little dull.

Their boat is a 34ft ours a 30ft Bavaria although they only marina hop and never really anchor and had just bought a shiny bling chrome rocna 10KG, so hence had this spare and didn’t fancy taking it back on the train with them.

Being a Yorkshire man basically free is too good to pass by but is it too small? Or is 10KG fine for our 30ft boat to comfortably overnight on? (Size guide suggests 30ft & 10KG is fine but personal experiences of similar are appreciated)

Personally I think 10 kg is to small for overnight but ok for a lunch stop. I suspect though that it will work better than your copy cqr unless the delta is also a copy.

We have a 15kg Delta for a 42 footer which is proportionately a much smaller anchor than a 10kg for a 30 footer and we mostly anchor overnight and its never dragged (once set) even in 50 plus knot winds. You will be fine with 10kg.

I have always used around that weight for a similar sized boat and anchor all over the shop. Dragging has been very rare and always seemed a function of problems on the seabed rather than the size of the anchor. I used to have have a 10kg Bruce (after getting rid of my 15kg model) and now a 9kg Knox.

The Delta generally gets good reports, though not the best - tell the doubters if you are offered a free Manson you will use it.

I've been looking at sizes for my boat (Sad 32). We have a Rocna 10kg which is just about the right size (just!) going by the sizing chart on the website but doesn't allow for the extra load of all the kit and stuff so is probably on the small size. Reading some stuff it seems that with the new generation of anchors it's not really about weight per-se but the size of the flukes etc -so a heavier anchor = more surface area so better holding when the going gets tough.

On the basis that I'd like to sleep at night I'm going to upgrade to the next larger - but only when funds permit.

A free anchor is not to be sniffed at and the Delta's a good-un then I'd take it but maybe in the back of your mind think about the next size up and selling the smaller Delta to help fund it if you are thinking of anchoring other than a quickie here or there - but that's just my half-educated guesses

You don't say how much chain you use, an extra couple of metres might help.

well if anyone has a free/cheap Rocna / Manson im all ears, but even then i think anything over a 11KG Manson or 12kg vulcan would be overkill on our boat, but its such a complex subject!

You don't say how much chain you use, an extra couple of metres might help.

well i have 50m 8mm chain available, all depends what the depth is but that's a topic for another thread

i just want to know if a 10kg delta is alright for my needs and how confident i can be with it, i mean im not a liveaboard and if its blowing 40 knots i wont be anchoring in the first place, but i'd expect in normal conditions, even overnight it will be no issue.
