I must admit, the first time it came up clean I was a little worried that it had just been sitting on top of the mud. Subsequent checks shows that it is holding (at least as much as I need it to).

I painted mine with an old tin of Hammerite I found in the shed. It had about 6 weeks to 'mature' before use. Seems to be holding up quite well and, now it's shiny, it comes up cleaner too.

I'm totally biased, being a galvanizer, but regalvanizing lasts far longer and doesn't need to be expensive.
Find a yachtie who works in a galvanizing plant and they will be sympathetic about their minimum order value (which is what causes the problem).
Some galvanizing is <35p/kg.
Paint only prevents rust where its in tact. If you anchor doesn't get scratched on the seabed what was it doing. As soon as you scratch it, and perforate the paint, the rusts starts, as it is not sacrificial protection, only a barrier.

It must very expensive to galvanize an anchor in the UK.I had my 25kg Rocna copy hot dipped galvanized in Lisbon for 12 euros sandblasting included.

And even thats very expensive compared to what it cost me when I had a galv plant on site.

I think it depends on the size.
Mine is now a 'feature' in FILs garden.
Nasty thing was only any good for ploughing (in sand at least) and pinching fingers.

Same here: silver hemorrhoid has worked well for my CQR anchor although I was tempted to paint it white.

The surveyor's report recommended me to 'arrest the rust on the anchor' but I have an aversion to my local police station...
