I have a 22kg CQR anchor that is pretty rusty and badly tarnished. Is there anything I can do with it? Can I get it sand blasted and regalvenized or something like that?

My boat is based in Hamble so ideally anything near there.

Cheers,
Jamie

Obviously time to buy a new one.

This forum is a great place to discuss which type to choose. I understand the new inflatable Fortess anchors are particularly good.

It's possible to get it galvanised but not cost effective for one anchor. I've known people to band together and send a whole collection of anchors and chain away for treatment but it will need quite a few to make it work financially.

Try zingasolv, good interim >5 years solution - easy too! Used it on my anchor chain and other stuff, happy to recomend it.

The more often you use it the more of the superficial rust you will wear off. You could also attack it with an angle grinder with a wire brush attachment. It is very unlikely the corrosion is going to cause any structural weakness in your lifetime (even if you are only 21). They were built to last.

If you are, that, worried about appearances, buy a new anchor - but not a CQR, they are very expensive and consensus seems to be there are better anchors.

Use it, use it or lose it!

Chuck it over and tow it along the sea bed for a bit. That will get the rust off, or cover it up with a layer of mud, which doesn't matter.

Don't bother buying a new one, a shiny anchor is an offence to a sailor's eye. I never heard of an anchor failing because it was rusty.

I finished painting my Rocna yesterday. White paint means it will be more visible on the seabed and hopefully will prevent rust stains on deck. Previous experience of painting a Delta was quite good.

It must very expensive to galvanize an anchor in the UK.I had my 25kg Rocna copy hot dipped galvanized in Lisbon for 12 euros sandblasting included.

Find a local agricultural engineers, making gates, pens and the like, and ask them what it would cost to include your anchor in their weekly galvanising batch. My local places charges me 70p/kg.

I painted mine with an old tin of Hammerite I found in the shed. It had about 6 weeks to 'mature' before use. Seems to be holding up quite well and, now it's shiny, it comes up cleaner too.
