Solar powered garden lights seem to be on sale now at most DIY stores for less than £5. I fixed one to my anchor ball. I now just hoist this when I anchor and the light comes on when it gets dark ….no more filling the hurricane lamp with paraffin or running down the boat battery.

I fixed one to my pulpit with a couple of jubilee clips and it comes on every night.

Now I can see she's still there and no-one ever runs into her in the night - not that there's a lot of night traffic at the top of Stanpit Creek!

I must get one to try. There was a lot of talk about these things a while back and I really couldn't decide on their suitability. Provided the battery can receive/hold sufficient charge I would have thought that they are ideal. A yacht anchorage is usually well out of traffic and the slightly reduced brilliance shouldn't be of too much consequence. Pairing the light up with the day shape sounds a great idea.

I guess technically they are not legal as of insufficient power so might put you on the wrong sided of a court case. However particularly on permanent moorings where no lights are required they are potentially useful. One of my friends with a mooring in the deep water channel reckons one of these has stopped the collisions he's suffered in the past. It gets very dark on an overcast night just downstream of the Anchorstone.

paid £6.99 for mine, all stainless steel, 2x AA rechargeable batteries that are replaceable running a white LED that provides a good light albeit with a slight blue tinge.

When the fan in your solar vent packs up (which they are designed to do 1 day after the guarantee runs out) you can retrofit the parts from a solar garden light. This gives you just enough light inside the boat at night to find your way to the heads.

Re: all stainless

My wife bought 6 stainless lights for £25 from QVC. Been running in the garden all summer with no probs at all.

Peter.
