Ummm, going into a pub for coffee, Oh well whatever. Anyway, I was in there a week or so ago. The food seems ok. The steak and ale pie had a puff pastry lid a foot high. Beer is ok, but I didn,t have a coffee!

It has gone downhill greatly in the past year or so. Bar staff are too young, useless and forever changing. There is no proper visible landlord or landlady. Food is getting worse. The reason that they do not need to try is that they are in the prime position in the high street. Prices are also high for the island.

Crew drank beer. Skipper remained sober for return to Hamble :-)

This must be the worst restaurant in Cowes. The last time I ate there the food was so bad that I sent it back and received a refund.

The Anchor's alright, they play live music, is much cheaper than the alamo (if i remember rightly,) and serves decent enough food for a fiver. The staff are useless youths? hmmh...you try meeting the best expectations on a saturday night when its capacity.

I use The Anchor quite regularly. I think that it has definitely gone downhill , especially as far as the staff and their abilities are concerned. They seem to be more pre -occupied with chatting each other up than giving a decent service. The food is nowadays ....OK...but no more than that in my humble opinion.
For Cowes I think you can't beat ' The Union' for service, beer and good food. (Right at the end of the High Street near the VAT offices)

Union

There's a young barmaid in there who is rather restful on the eye. Don't think she works weekends!

Only problem is that it's a Gales pub with Gales beer.

Duh! Its only just dawned on me. If your talking about the weekend I think you are. Would it be the weekend I killed Bambi with the van of mine on the way down to a certain Sunseeker?

Re: Gales (beer)

Forget all this rubbish about rubbish pubs what's the problem with Gales

or should I be more specific - what's the matter with you?

Fine beer usually well kept in Gales's pubs. The HSB is too sweet for some but Butser or Best which originally was 1/2 HSB and 1/2 Butser is fine by me.

Re: Gales (beer)

Each to his own, but I find Gales beer too sweet (not just the HSB but the Butser and GB also). I toured the brewery once and heard a rumour that the head brewer took 4 sugars in his coffee!

My local is a Gales pub and a large proportion of the regulars drink lager rather than Gales, except when there's a decent guest beer. Personally, I put up with GB but I'm certainly not alone in my opinion.

Re: Agreed

<<Each to his own>>

Hmmm 4 sugars that may explain a lot I find HSB too sweet but the others OK

but then I have a savoury set of teeth that magically metamorhose into a sweet set half way through each meal.
