Anchor Chain size advice please

Vyv Cox did test chain, see his website, and at that time found that much chain available in the UK was, sourced from China, and near G40 quality. Why Chinese chain was of such 'high' quality remains a mystery. Relying on the idea that Chinese chain is still G40 is unsupportable, in the absence of further testing.

This is what I think.
Grade 30 specification calls for 'dead mild' steel, i.e. very low carbon steel. In China there are vast quantities of mild steel, perhaps 0.2% carbon. It is far more sensible to use that rather than go to special lengths to obtain dead mild. There is nothing wrong in exceeding the specified strength but I would not rely on this being the case everywhere.

Thanks everyone for the advice, seems to be a consensus for 6mm chain which is good snd what I’ll go with. Juries still out on size & type of anchor to buy, but plenty of designs mentioned which I hadn’t heard of (died in the wool CQR man) and I’ll need to research these. Thanks again.

All new generation anchors as far as I can see are multiple times better than your CQR. It comes down to design that fits your stemhead fitting and possibly cost.

What did you get in the end WS?

Apparently a new, new generation anchor is being unveiled for the coming season. Don't be left behind :)

I did end up buying a secondhand (but new) Rocna Vulcan 9kg and 50 meters of 6mm chain. However, this thread is over 3 years old and in the interim I’ve sold the Sadler, bought a Dufour 2800 which I’ve just sold to my son and now pretty much given up sailing. I’m still involved in the boat maintenance side of things (presently stripping the Treadmaster from the deck) and I do go out for the occasional sail but not very often!

For what it is worth, in the US, or at least in my area ...

Since most of the windlasses are matched to G43, most of the chandleries carry only G43 in stock.

Of course, they don't carry matching high strength shackles, but that is a whole nuther' thread.
