This is what I think.Vyv Cox did test chain, see his website, and at that time found that much chain available in the UK was, sourced from China, and near G40 quality. Why Chinese chain was of such 'high' quality remains a mystery. Relying on the idea that Chinese chain is still G40 is unsupportable, in the absence of further testing.

Grade 30 specification calls for 'dead mild' steel, i.e. very low carbon steel. In China there are vast quantities of mild steel, perhaps 0.2% carbon. It is far more sensible to use that rather than go to special lengths to obtain dead mild. There is nothing wrong in exceeding the specified strength but I would not rely on this being the case everywhere.
