hlb asked recently about a strong chain sling to take the weight of the chain off the windlass.
Parsons chain make a wide range of tough chain grabbers which lock onto the chain securely. They also make swivel links with high specs.

Jimmy Green has the open-ended type - which can in theory release of its own volition - and they now produce a chain gripper which has a captive pin.
