Had a Furuno 31 on the last boat and it was fantastic for anchor watch, you could see the "dirty fingernail" develop as the boat swung to anchor and could accurately place a waypoint for the actual anchor drop point. The Garmin on our present boat, however, doesn't go down to the small range required for this.
Any comments? ( I don't use the Garmin for watch purposes as I don't believe I can set it up accurately enough)
P.S. off to Tarbert again this weekend. Don't want any more /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif comments from claymore watchers.

I hit the Man Over Board button when I think the anchor hits the bottom. This gives me range in metres and distance (I need not have said that) ....my garmin 72 will give a good large scale trace, but seemingly not my Standard Horizon CP180...or I haven't yet worked out how.

how do you cope with the false alarms where the boat goes walkabout in one direction or the other, presumably due to GPS errors or anomolies.... or doesnt this happen to anyone else

If I am going to be there past the turn of the tide I make the circle a circle bigger. If I am close to other boats then I make the circle smaller and endure the false alarms - I'd rather get up to see if I really am swinging too close to someone.

I have never had an alarm due to gps error.

One irritating feature of the garmin 72 is that if you cancel the alarm eg when leaving the anchorage, it is still set as ON in the Setup, so is apt to go off when you don't expect, like the next time you turn it on.

How are you sposed to use the anchor alrm on a 72, or a 276C for that matter ? I have both & just don't seem to be able to get it behaving at all consistently.

Sometimes I start navigating to another point, without actually moving the boat & the thing goes off right away. Other times, same drill, boat moves way more than the alarm is set for....and not a dicky bird!

Have played with both wandering the pontoons, trying different things, and the manual just says switch it on in setup - I'm sure it's dead easy really - but anyone got any clues for me? doubly frustrating, being a clever-dick in general with computery/electronics things. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
