Lidl too at the moment.

As for Lord Sugar a brown paper bag is probably the best treatment for his complextion.

I looked at ANAF extinguisher in Aldi last year and thought they looked a bit cheaply made an the bracket looked flimsy - possibly not adequately robust to survive on a boat.
Also the ones I looked at in Aldi were not CE marked. That may have changed?
But better than no extinguisher at all.

Beware of cheap extinguisher brackets.
If you run aground and stop abruptly, the extinguisher will go its own way,and may go off. Or it may hit you in the crotch.
Or both.
Luckily, not my boat.

Hi!
I’m firefighting engineer from Poland, don’t buy cheap car fire extinguisher with separate inner launching gas cylinder, because there is possibility that moisture can enter inside and powder will lump oneself.
Better solution is powder extinguisher, with already mixed gas and powder, pressure inside this type of extinguisher is higher than in the atmosphere that prevents moisture from getting into the powder. You can easily distinguish them, they have pressure gauge. Additionally the dial rotating according to temperature, informs you that extinguisher is ready to operate.
Don’t forget smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, especially if you use heating device!
Best regards
Rafal

Think twice before buying powder extinguishers. They make a real mess. So if the fire doesn't mess up the place the powder will.
Foam is preferable although you need to make sure you have ones that can bear below freezing temperatures.

I'm not so bothered about the mess afterwards, it's worth it if it prevents a serious fire. I'm more concerned at the complete whiteout shown in the Crash Test Boat video, obscuring all vision and making it hard to breathe. I have foam on Ariam, it's not expensive any more.

The problem with powder is (it's some form of salt) that it corrodes any electric part it hits beyond repair. A fellow boater had a fire in the engine room because of a failing turbo. The automatic fire extinguisher kicked in and did kill the fire. Afterwards he had to replace every electric part in the engine room despite the the actual fire-damage was very limited. With foam the total damage amount would have been much less.

And with halon-replacement gas, even less :encouragement:

The 1-litre FE36 auto in my engine bay is the only expensive extinguisher on board :)

Could not agree more.
Best is halon or halon substitute as it will not make a mess but just as a lesson get a cheap powder one and discharge it into a cardboard box about the same size as your engine bay......now imagine the cleanup........

powder is better than sinking

The powder mess problem is solved by new water mist extinguishers which can be used on class A, B, C, F and electrical fires

Years ago we were racing my Stella at Burnham week when my crew kicked the chubb powder extinguisher. It went off & sprayed all around the wood cockpit floor. fortunately he was quick enough to grab it as it spun & heaved it over the side. We then threw a bucket of water over the powder to wash it into the bilge. Not one of us could stand up after that & we had the stuff on our shoes so walking below just made things below. We had to abandon the race & sail home in bare feet.
A couple of years later i had a petrol fire ( Stuart P4MC) & petrol on top of the water in the bilge flared up. It took 2 extinguishers to put it out & the mess was unbelievable. I even managed to give my mates open bag a squirt & ruined his dress suit ( We had been living it up on the Stella Rally in Nieuport)

However, The fire was frightening & the petrol floating on the water just sloshed the fire in & out of the bilge compartments. But the extinguishers did the job so I will always use Chub regardless of cost
