Soooo.....
You will remember the fun and games of the Thames and Ramsgate visits.
So, recon injectors in the stbd engine, check the timing - what a s*d of a job. The flywheel inspection cover is at the bottom of the housing, so it is a mirror or the borescope to see it. Timing is ok. Assemble everything, one injector pipe throws its olive (Popeye would have something to say about that if he found out), otherwise all ok.
Bleed and start up, engine sounds very sweet. Huzzah!
Orft we go for a quick trial, and the stbd engine behaves - but still down on power
Get back to the marina and said engine cuts out and knocks when started. Oh bother, says I, in best Pooh manner. Moor boat bows on as I want to seal up a leak on the bows later. Oh the fun of a classic boat,eh? Almost makes me want a Binliner... Yea, right. But only if it has got one of those noisey egg whisks fitted in the bows.
To add to the fun the port alternator stops working.
Had a (long) talk to Peter at Rochester City Diesel and he asks what filters I have on the cav units. Laughs at me when I say Fram. So bought 4 Delphi's from him, cost about £6 each as opposed to £1.55 for the Fram. You can see why when you compare them too. Meanwhile he has reconned my old injectors and says they are/were full of sh*te. Oh deary me as Eeyore might say, how gloomy is that?
Back to the boat, and drain a bit of fuel from the tanks and, it's dirty. Hmmm.. I paid much dosh for polishing / cleaning last year, and the only fuel bought was from the marina, just before the 2 trips. A bit of a coincidence I think, so a call to the marina to ask them to check their tanks. They have taken this seriously, and are getting back to me.
Racor 10micron filter elements coming to go with the Delphi's @ 6 micron. Plus a filter funnel, going to be a bit more carefull now, take all precautions. Well, most, or how will the new funnel work with a condom over the spout? As an old gf used to say, you're not coming in here without a condom over the spout.
So this weekend will mean looking inside the tanks, changing filters, cleaning the turbine thingys in the Racors, check the lines and lift pumps too. Nice. I now warn you that the weather will be scorchio on Sat and Sun, but cr*p on Monday when I want to go out.
New alternators coming as the old Cav ones are ancient 30A with separate regulators and don't charge on tickover. Fed up with buying new regs regularly - oh, spot the pun! It will be great to rip out all the old masses of wiring and fit the new alternators with only 2 wires!! And they should be 60/70A too. Fried wires and batteries, anyone?
The plotter has returned after its visit to the Garmin school of NMEA. It is now fluent and I can get pretty pics of the seabed, water speed, depth, and temp. Why oh why (engage Daily Wail mode) do you need the sea temp?? I suppose you will know how long you might survive before the hypothermia gets you if you fall overboard. "Don't fall over the side today everyone, as its only 9deg. Wait 'til next summer for that!"
Still lots to do. Will it ever end? Will I ever get out of the Medway again? Bit like the Irishman (I can do this as I am part Irish), to the AA man, "What's the problem with me car?" "Sh*t in the carburettor" "Oh, how often do I need to do that?"
Anyone got some nice, clean, cheap diesel I can buy?
Will Pooh get his honey? (eh?)
Was it Owl that sh*t on my car last weekend while it was parked at the marina?
Is Christopher Robin gay?
More Eeyore mumblings during/after the weekend.
