At very short notice I've signed up to help a mate take his Fisher 34 on a saunter down the French coast to Ouistreham, from whence I shall return home on public transport.
This boat has a large shed on top of it, and he therefore tells me that I don't need to take oilies, and that a pair of slippers may be useful.
What manner of boating is this? Can anyone suggest suitable wear and behaviour?
What's French for a pint of Masterbrew?
On the plus side he's agreed to try to reach St.Valery-sur-Somme if the weather permits, which sounds much like an East Coast creek except it has big waves, and presumably French bars at the end of it.

Sounds more like a holiday than going sailing.

Suggest large bucket with muddy melly salty water. Have shower with it every 30s - especially hair/eyebrows.

Then at least when you get home you can say that you have been sailing, rather than simply being on a cruise.

I would take oilies and boots etc as an insurance policy. A nice pair of slacks and a cardigan might fit in quite well. Not sailing as we know it but time on the water is not to be sniffed at. Have fun.

Nice pair of slacks? Cardigan? Blimey I don't think so. I've got an old fleece that smells of diesel, I suppose that could be a smoking jacket.

Only if you set light to it! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This is all starting to sound more of a challenge that I expected./forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Some years ago I persuaded this chap to try and get through the Swale just after LW, in his Fisher 30 (it's grown up since then). When predictably we went aground, he had a good moan, and handed me the Almanac saying 'just check the tide times will you'. When I pointed out that it was the previous year's almanac, he said "You can always learn from history".
No I didn't make this up.
Maybe I have an urgent meeting on Monday that I just can't miss...

That's more like what I know too /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Blimey, having seen the St. Valery sur Somme entrance from the quayside and the approaches from the chart, all I can say is that I hope he has this year's almanac, for there is an awful lot of sand out there

Just to say that haveing a pilothouse doesn't mean you don't need oilies - unless he doesn't propose to sail.
Then again, it's a Fisher so maybe he wont bother.
