An answer to the 'what oil for my engine' question

Re: An answer to the \'what oil for my engine\' question

Yes - Nice thread Vyv !

There is also an oil produced by Unipart Marine specially designed for older lower revving diesel engines.

Most chandlers deal with Unipart Marine and either stock it or can get it for you.

The cost is around £20 for 5 ltrs.

The can states ' 20w-50, api/cc/se '

Vyv, with your undisputed knowledge on this subject, perhaps the editors at YM should take note and commission you to produce a full length article. We could then have something interesting and informative to read in a forthcoming issue of YM!

I cannot ever recall the important subject of engine oil ever being covered.

Re: An answer to the \'what oil for my engine\' question

I've just put Castrol Agripower in our Volvo Penta MD2030. For no other reason than it is cheap and says 'for older engines' on the can. Prompted by your post I looked up the rating - API CF-4.

Now the engine manual, still available on the VP web site, says the engine needs an "API CD" rated oil. BUT it also gives the VP part number for their very expensive blue can - which is apparently rated "VDS-2, API CG-4, ACEA E3".

Confused? I am /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: An answer to the \'what oil for my engine\' question

i just buy the volvo stuff in the blue can - cause it's cheaper than getting it wrong!!

Re: An answer to the \'what oil for my engine\' question

From all the very interesting posts so far it appears most of us have been nearly killing our old marine engines with kindness.
Our md7b has had Endurance 4 marine 4stroke diesel oil from the chandelry until they stopped making it 1-2 years ago. I've just looked it up on an old SL catalogue and its CF4 at about £10/ 5litre in 2000. The engine's done 2000hrs no problem. Since Endurance oil dissappeared, (I think it was made by CarPlan), I have used Lidl motor oil, £6.88 / 5 litre. Looking on the can now I find this is CF4 as well. Going round our backstreet car parts shop there is no CD oil; all CF4 and above except vintage car oil 50 grade about CA spec which I think is too poor for the boat.

The man there says that CD grade is obsolete on the high street, ordinary customers wouldn't buy it, and on the web the Comma,CARplan type sites virtually don't mention it except I think Comma do a tractor oil 25litre drum.

So we shall see. Any other experiences?

I always fill my engine from a genuine Volvo Penta 1 litre bottle. I fill this with cheap oil in the cockpit, well out of sight of the engine.

Despite this I think it suspects something is up.

In fact, I don't think it likes me....

Re: An answer to the \'what oil for my engine\' question

An oil related question please vyv-cox, What is the MB values often quoted on tins and spec?

Often like MB 229.1
eg the castrol grades mostly have this value for the simpler mineral oil.

Many thanks

Malcolm

vyv
come on where is the evidence to support your theory that hi grade oil will screw up a yacht engine?

Re: An answer to the \'what oil for my engine\' question

I have a 20+ y o Bukh 20, manual spec is CC/CD W30 and in various years I have readily sourced CD oils 20W-50 from the usual range of small single Autoparts/ Car Accessories type shops without any difficulty at all & they are usually obscure but cheaper brands, altho I have come across Duckhams Classic in a number of these types of shop which is this spec. In fact this winter, I came across a simple CC 30W non Turbo Diesel Oil being sold in my local MDC shop, so they are reasonably locatable if you look elsewhere than Halfords or other high volume outlets.

Re: An answer to the \'what oil for my engine\' question

Stu, give this guy a call, he wont mind, put the question to him. He'll tell you he makes loads of money from people loving their engines too much. Warming them up and putting 'best' oil in.

It is at my age

Well I do hope for SWIMBO's peace of mind it is at least Grade KY and not CD

Re: An answer to the \'what oil for my engine\' question

In warehouses the old oils may not be available any more, but if you order oil from a specialist they will have it manufactured to specs. Not cheap, though, and only in 20 or 25 liter barrels. Last time my SAE30 oil for the gearbox was €80 for 20 liters. Should last me 20 years, though!

Confused of Exeter..............

I have almost 20 year old naturally aspirated Ford engines and did an oil change 2 days ago and put in 15/40 Rimula X which is what I used in my previous boat, again Ford based engine but that was turbo'd.

Is Rimula X right for naturally aspirated engines of that age ie 19 years?
