Amusing Boat Names

I dont think I will ever forget being astonished to see a liveaboard motor boat in Brighton Marina called "Cruising Queens".

Just this week saw "Wet Dream". Imagine having to make a distress call - "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. Wet Dream Wet Dream" !!

I bought a J24 called Dreams, before I got it home it had aquired the prefix "Wet" so it got changed pretty quickly to Jus B Coz. over the next few years we raced against two other J's called
J Y Kelly and Joe Blob.
usually made for an interesting slip of the tongue at the prize giving:D

I remember seeing a Fireball when some were being built / designed by Virgin ( nothing to do with R.Branson ! ) - with a rather attractive young lady crew; the name of the boat written all over the side ? " She's a Virgin'.

Don't know if this was elaborated on as time went on.

I met one called dx/dt (pronounced velocity). His second boat was called d2x/dt2 (acceleration)

Then there was Cutlet - owned by a butcher: cutlets paid for it so that's what it's going to be called.

And one called 'Boatfile'. Distinct lack of imagination there.

When we got our first boat my Dad wanted to call it Blunt End (where do you paint the name on a dinghy?). In the end we called it Adagio and that's how it went - slowly.

Thanks Dad

There is a yacht named "Thanks Dad" that ties up on Vliho quay during the season, often wonder what the story behind that is.

I assume you mean the Hunter 27OOD? Used to belong (and possibly still does) to a friend, who purchaed it with her dad's inheritance. Her name is Ellie Wainwright. If you see her say hi to her for me (haven't seen her for years).

I have a KMV 18 foot open fishing boat called " Happy Hooker"- usually raises a smile. An impecunious lady with a 40 foot narrow boat had it painted different colours port and starboard, with two different names. She did this to get longer on BW short stay moorings-she just turned it round. She got away with it for a long time.

I heard of a chap with a National 12 that was painted different colours on each side to confuse the opposition whilst going for the upwind mark.

Heard of a confession.. On the VHF in the Oosterschelte..

A merchant ship was calling to yacht called The Second Half" who was blocking in the seep water channel

Said the Merchantman.. "if you don't get out the way I make two quarters of you!!"

(was told me by the skipper of the two quarters!)

Many years ago, a good friend and I had both been dumped by respective girlfriends. To console ourselves we convinced each other the way forward was to purchase a hobie 16 between us. This, we were sure, would make us "totty magnets". We named the boat "The Old Bag" in honour of the two girls who had dumped us.

Somehow, the name has changed over the years and the hobie is now known affectionately as "Old Mother Sloppy Rudders".
