I'm considering a 4/5 day whistle stop trip to Amsterdam from Ipswich.

We'll sail to Ijmuiden (24H) and use the Noordzeekanaal to get to Amsterdam. It would be nice to use the inland waterways to go to Rotterdam before sailing home from there. Can someone point me toward some info on the night convoy through Amsterdam south?

Also, how long does the journey (to Rotterdam) take through the canals?

We usually take two days from Amsterdam to the Maas, going via Haarlem, the daytime route. It can just about be done in one on the red-eye route. You need to have the bridge times carefully planned to make good time, especially north of Haarlem, at Sassenheim and at Gouda.

On the other hand, many of these are nice places to stay, and a quiet night on on of the lakes or by the canal side can be very pleasant.

It is not unknown for bridges to break down and delays occur. Friends of ours had to backtrack after going to Leiden a couple of years ago, and we have been held up for many hours on occasion. Some of the countryside is very attractive and I would be prepared to take it fairly easily if you have not done it before.
