I want to see exactly how many amps i'm drawing at different times, so will this plan work? It won't be permanent.

The shunt can go in the positive or negative connection. The wires between the unit and the shunt can be quite thin as they will carry virtually no current. I fitted permanently fuse both with low value fuses, or fit in the negativeconnection if possible.

As said some do not need a separate power supply although I beleive it is possible to buy power supply units for those that do which enable them to be powered from the main battery.

I think i'll power it from a 9v battery with its own on/off switch.
