No idea but at a guess the SI system is regarded as a legal system of measurement for many institutions and their subscribing agencies.

Therefore, the Americas Cup (famous for its legal wrangling), may have decided to use this system and incorporate it into the instrumentation on the yachts. Therefore, for convenience, as Reverend Ludd points out, the data transmitted to the public is presented in SI multiples.
A legal standard of measurement could be important in protests, if for example establishing an overlap and consequent manoeuvring is protested.

I find it very irritating, kms are not legal tender at sea!
Same on 'Dangerous Catch'. American boats, at sea yet the commentary by that very irritating voiceover Bill Petrie is going on about kms north or whatever of Dutch Harbour WHY? American virwers would probably hear an American commentary giving what mph or knots, who is this Scots commentary aimed at, if was for kilometer country it wouldn't be his commentary would it?
BBC are good at it too, seems like they use it when they want the size or the distance to sound much bigger.

Was there today for the match racing, there was a really good atmosphere and big crowds.
Plymouth is a superb venue for this racing, it's a natural amphitheatre and the course laid was really close inshore so ideal for spectators. Commentary was excellent too.

US usually use mph, some of Europe use m/s & we use Beaufort Scale/knots, so take your choice.
