Americas Cup - thrilling racing at last

That was incredible - they closed up to within a boat length or two of Oracle, then gybed away and started sailing back up the course - they must have had 0 VMG at that time.

Seems to me that TNZ probably have a marginal advantage in boat speed over the whole course, but are throwing it away with tactical errors.

However they did have the "wrong" entry into the start both times whereas today they will have the preferred entry - if they don't wrap things up this evening then Oracle will be firm favourites

I agree, it appears that Ainslie and Slingsby are getting virtually everything right especially spotting the wind pressure, but Davies is on his own on the NZ boat and rather like a rabbit in the headlights.

I dont quite get the benefit of entering the starting box early. The boat that comes in second still has plenty of time to get into a favourable position on the leeward lay line and can defend themselves by luffing up, let alone hooking. They both need to get better at hitting the start line at full speed though.

Well I'm gunning for the Kiwi's with all my heart; not only are they better sports than the Americans ( who seem to be on shore remotely controlling better sailors now the lawyers are taking a back seat ! ) - surely the financial boon of holding the next Cup would be a huge boost to New Zealands' economy ?

...
I would like america to win.
Not because i like them but if benny boy gets a team together next time it will cost less & easier to get sponsorship than if in new zealand
Besides if we ever won it i would want to win it from the yanks otherwise they will say we only got it back because so & so messed up

Looks like just one race today then.

It seemed that in the very light winds (when they were using the Code 0s) TNZ had the advantage - but then there wasn't enough time to complete the race - judging by the first race yesterday they can't really hope to complete the race unless there is about 14knts of wind.

I just heard that boat speed they display is from the GPS and must be speed over the ground. Surely speed through the water is more important!

This AC is turning into a great regatta ruined by some absurd rules.

A 40 min time limit, but no facility to make the course shorter so no chance of completing a race in sub 10kts of wind. But never mind, let em race anyway.

A wind limit that is so strict it cans racing well after the start of a race based on a 15s gust 1 knot above the limit.

And now a time limit to start the second race that conflicts with the required break between races, after a mere 30 min delay in getting the first race off.

If this is what was required to make sailing exciting to non sailors, then it's failed, big time. How the hell would you explain any of that **** to someone new to sailing? I can barely get my head around it....

Obviously you have to be a politician as well as a sailor: Dean Barker after today's race "We'd love to race again today, but it's not allowed". Hmmm

It's all TV related. 40 min allows for 20 min of inserted advertising every hour. Too much wind could break an AC72, and spoil the TV series. 30 minutes between races allows a divert to a news insert and some more advertising.
Actually they are doing a good job of trying to explain sailboat racing to people who usually only watch baseball or US footy.

Who or what determines which boat enters the box first at the start? It seems that Oracle have had more than their fair share of this advantage??

I think it is done in "pairs" - Race 1&2, race 3&4, race 5&6 etc etc. So each team gets two goes as Port entry, then 2 as Stbd entry and so on. It got a bit confusing when a couple of races got postponed during the race, and they restarted with the same team on the same Port/Stbd entry.

Lots more info at the usual source of reference:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_America's_Cup !!!!!!!

EDIT: Boat on port tack enters the start area 10sec before the stbd tack boat.

I get that it's TV related, but I think they're shooting themselves in the foot. Why oh why didn't they allow themselves to make the course slightly smaller on the light wind day so they could get round inside 40m? How exactly is it good TV to show someone a race for 40 minutes and then, just as one boat nears the finish line, say "ooops, time's up"?

And similarly, how is it good TV to get a race started, watch them zoom around happily then say, the wind got up 1 knot, for 15s, game over?
