Americas Cup - thrilling racing at last

Why are they still racing? Once TNZ won their eighth race, they've won.

It's great racing but the result was determined a couple of days ago.

They need to win 9.
Oracle can never win more than 7 (points). So all the kiwis have to do is turn up and pootle off out the way some where and munch their lunch. If your argument is correct then applying a 2 point deduction was irrelevant.

The winning boat needs to win 9 races. Oracles 2 point deduction put them at -2 at the start, meaning they need to win 11 over all to win. ETNZ needs one more win.

Todays racing was from the sublime to the ridiculous.

It is the first to 9 points, rather than the best of 17 races. So they may have to race 19 times

Due to the delayed start of today's first race I don't think there will be time for a second... (Second race needs to start before 14.40 local time.)

If racing doesn't get underway before then it doesn't happen at all!!!!!

EDIT: It didn't happen...

This is rapidly descending into farce.

First too much wind, then too little, now from the wrong direction.

Not really a farce, just racing! I've sailed many events which have suffered from abandoned and postponed races because of too much or too little wind, and have both suffered and benefited from race time limits. What surprised me was the 40 minute race time limit and the narrow time window for starting the second race. Both of these are probably dictated by TV network schedules. I've actually been amazed at how consistent and predictable the wind direction and speed in San Francisco has been until the last couple of days.
