America's Cup / Louis Vuitton capers start again

Have a look at www.americascup.com/en/results.html Our Ben has won 2 out of 3 races today and looking good for double points tomorrow.

And whilst I want our Ben to sweep the floor with the rest of them I really can't get excited about the concept of multihulls being used for the most important cup in sailing.

Any chance we can commission a new, monohull specific, cup (AKA the 'new mug') to be competed for around the IOW? You know, a prize for 'proper' sailing boats.

Your thoughts please...

Just watching the recording of yesterday. WTF is the twerp of a comentator saying about km per hour when the screen display says knots!!!

I can see the commercial attraction for such a venture. After all with the races taking three times as long there would be so much more opportunity for them to display the various sponsors logos..... Keeping spectators awake of course might be a bit of a challenge :D

I understand that a certain "Royal" yacht club is indeed working on putting together a UK based competition, aka The 1851 Cup.

Its F1 on water, boring

I believe that when they actually get to Bermuda for the main event, J classes will be on the undercard.
They're certainly planning an event for about the same time. It's hard to get all the boats to comply though since all the owners basically hate each other but the AC should be big enough for them to forget that for a week or so.

If only they could persuade the owners not to turn up at all and leave the Js in the hands of Spatial, Aisle, Percy et al... Now THAT would be a regatta to savour...

That said, I had the pleasure of berthing adjacent to one of the Js in Falmouth a few years ago and was very pleasantly surprised by what a thoroughly nice bunch they all were, both the crew and the owner.
