I can just report the comments made by 2 friends who owned or sailed such a boat:

- Very comfortable
- Poor sailing
- Hydraulic steering gives no feed back, therefore a tendency to always overreact

This is like buying French Champagne!.. a touch of Class..
But there are plenty of other wines (spumantes) as good, but more cheaper...

Dear Alain,

I was really impressed reading the concepts behind your Spade anchor.

Concernig Champagne, you know that usually there are 3 different levels of quality for each brand and for exemple a Dom Perignon taste differently comparing to a Brut Imperial.

Even in Spumante sparkling wines you will find a difference betweeen an Asti Spumante and a Berlucchi Rosè.

Concerning the Santorin, can you compare it to a Dom Perignon?

Many thanks for your comments about the anchor..

In France (and I believe world wide) Amel boats have a justified reputation of high quality. Among blue water cruisers, we meet quite often Amel boats, Santorin and Super Maramu.. and owners are very satisfied..
Dom Perignon?? Yes, it could be a good comparison.. Santé.. :0)

I'm a motor boater but we have partied on a friends Amel in Rome (I think it was a bit bigger than 40 ft) but a boat like that could convert me to being a raggie...beautiful!

Great boat - considered to be the Rolls Royce of boats in France.

Contrary to what somebody else said it does not have hydraulic steering but it is very low geared. Amel said he didn't want hydraulics on board because too difficult to repair if off the beaten track. That's why electric motors are used for furlng etc.

PS They are not manufactured anymore; Amel is at full capacity with the Super Maramu.

Just out of interest I heard that Mr Amel, now in his 90's has given his factory to the workforce....sounds like a nice chap!

We looked very carefully at Amels this year, when choosing a 40+ foot liveaboard for two of us mainly for the Med. Very subjective, but we found them rather lacking in character and ended up buying a Nauticat 42 which is a comparably-priced yacht. Do have a look at Nauticats before deciding and be aware that some are primarily motor-sailors. The N42 and N43 both have excellent sailing characteristics. Drop me a private email if you are seriously looking at these as I know a fair bit about and may have seen some of those that are on the market at the moment.
