Went over to Marine Superstore in Port Solent this afternoon for some new fenders. Found just enough but last one was a bit scuffed and grubby so when I went to the checkout I asked if they would mind knoocking something off the price (have spent about £2000 the last 2 months there). Silly me!!! I should have known not to ask in the first place, looked at the receipt and a whopping 55p had been taken off the total price!

You got off lightly.

When I went there early last year with a large shopping list, I wandered around for a while checking out breathable oilies for my SWMBO, bunch of safety stuff, and the like. One obnoxious member of staff kept stage whispering 'look out, he looks like a shop lifter'. While tempted to go and confront him, I just ignored him. Finally made my decisions, grabbed a shopping basket and gathered up my selection and headed for the checkout minus oilies with a fair bit of worth of kit.

One of the other members of staff told the obnoxious git his big mouth would get him into trouble one day

I asked for help, as they didn't have the breathables I wanted on display in suitable size, so they came and looked, checked store room, and said they'd order them and deliver by post within days. Told them I needed them for next weekend.

Called them next week and told no one was around to check status, so left message to call me. No response. In meantime ordered them cheaper on internet, so when they called too late in the week to post them to me in time, I told them I'd already received them from elsewhere.

Whole thing left a foul taste in my mouth. I''ve been back there twice, with friends who wanted to visit, and exchanged the favour by wandering round talking very, very loudly about how you have to be careful that you grab something and go to check out immediately, or you're likely to be accused of being a shoplifter, and recount whole experience loudly while walking around store - infantile, but does make me feel better.

Another disappointing chandler

with whom I had spent rather more than that, was asked to get in three very small spares for items which he had sold me - a pump, a switch and a winch. That was in February; I have called in a couple of times and nothing has been done, and nothing more will be spent until he gets on with it.

I've got to the point where I walk into a chandlery and the hairs stand up on the back of my neck, which seems usually to be followed by a sharp pain in the wallet.

In fairness to Marine Superstore they usually have what I want. They have also proved cheaper than some of the other Chandlers in the area (noticeably Alladins cave.)
However, it's not a place I would order from. If they don't have it - walk away.

Although it can be a bit of a jumble sale in there, we've had very good service, even when ordering....and exchanging items with no receipt etc . prices seem ok to me.

We did a deal with Marine Superstore when fitting the boat out - gave them a list of kit we wanted and asked for their best price. Got about 15% off as I recall.

In defence of the small man...

Is this a trait of the big outlets?

My local chandlery is an one-man and family run operation and although prices are the usual marine variety, the advice and help freely given more than compensates. As well as occasionally lending out tools to get me out of a jam he has saved me £s by suggesting different and better ways of doing things.

The pity is that the big boys have the buying power which puts them at an advantage over the small guy and if we don't use him we will all have to put up with ingoramuses.

Re: Ahh.. The pleasure and pain of boat ownership. nm

Purely as a matter of interest for those on the E.Coast...Heron Yacht Services @ Brightlingsea do some brilliant deals and are invariably significantly more competetive than most others I've come across. including on-line....However, Alan Beale is only available on landline/Mobile...07836545509...or at whichever Boat Jumbly happens to be on at the time...,. No pecunary interest other than a very satisfied customer.

I have been with someone who got 10% taken off at Alladins Cave and a knife thrown in aswell last year.

On the east coast I was purchasing a gibb harness point for the cockpit and the relative bolts. The eye had 10 pounds something although it was nearly worn off and the 4 bolts and washers were priced individually. The women said that she would put it through as one item and the total was £5! That was at Tollesbury marina.

Re: It cuts both ways

I buy diesel by the drip, maybe £2.70 would be a big fill up, but MDL staff still cheerfully give me my Club Outlook discount.

Shamrock Quay Chandlers have a loyalty discount card which pays out once a year in the form of a voucher. If your prudent this pays for your anti fouling if your less cautious it would buy you a liferaft.
