Amazing ain\'t it! NB

How the executive of the govt can decide to ignore a piece of legislation because it's inconvenient. Perhaps in this case (hunting) its trivial but the precedent being set has enormous constitutional consequences. I've always been proud of being British with out reputation for justice & fairmindedness however INHO all that has gone done the pan now. I mourn the passing of our parliamentary democracy.

Re: Amazing ain\'t it! NB

Welcome to the world of opportunistic governments. Yet another thing we've copied over from the country of G.W. B. (if you would like to call that a country, that is)

A.

Re: Amazing ain\'t it! NB

Can't blame GWB for opportunist goverment as TB and co were doing it before he was elected, maybe we'll get sued for exporting it to the states /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Re: Amazing ain\'t it! NB

Probably opening a huuuuuuge can 'o worms here...but so what!...
These 'games' of power and strategy have been played out for thousands of years, both home and abroad. Deals and trade-offs to to retain wealth and power are what governments and people in high places are all about.
If you want an insight into how these people work, try looking at 'Congressman McFadden on the Federal Reserve' on the 'net sometime. A very long and protracted speech in the House of Representatives in 1923, but the content is amazing. All well documented and well read the world over. After this speech, 'they' tried three times to kill him. Got him in the end as well!

Re: Amazing ain\'t it! NB

Not trivial if you are one of the many '000's that partake in this centuries old activity (I'm NOT one of them by the way, before you send any hatemail!!) I am outraged at the twists and turns this Government will do to avoid telling the truth on important matters (Iraq) and avoid having to face up to their decisions over sensitive issues during the lead up to an election. I am further saddened by the fact that they are almost certain to get in again next time. Unbelievable. It seems a shame that the only capable politician amongst them (Blunkett), (who at least battled for the good of the Country over Immigration for example, only to be thwarted by an outdated judiciary at every turn), had to go for something relatively minor (and I'm sure they all do it), and the main man, TB carries on unscathed through all the outrages committed by his Gov't. For God's sake Great Britain, WAKE UP.

Re: Amazing ain\'t it! NB

Blunkett has become a right-wing fascist and I am pleased to see the back of him, that's for sure. You cannot justify detention without trial.

The Tories will never win until they get a leader with some charisma. And someone should tell them that British women will never vote for a baldy. So any way you look at it, we in the entrepreneural class are doomed to suffer at least another 5 years of peril at the hand of this sickening Labour government. I am thinking of getting out of this country until a sensible government gets voted back in.

Re: Amazing ain\'t it! NB

Its the old "middle way" argument

Don't ban hunting and don't not ban hunting

Keep things quiet until after the next election - don't want riots in the middle of the campaign

As for Blunkett if hes the most capable we really are in trouble.

Immigration yes a wonderful solution someone applies for asylum and is entitled to normal benefits.

Application fails so deported - unless there is a risk to his safety or he appeals.

At this point all benefits stop. He cannot hold National Insurance number so cannot work.

So what does he do - starve in the gutter, go cockle picking in Morecambe Bay, what?

Main thing is of course hes off the book so numbers look good - apart from petty crime commited by failed asylum seekers (can't think why they do that).

Not sure where judiciary thwarted him except for trying to prevent him locking people up indefinately without trial. something I would suggest that is the most obvious first step to a totalitarian society.

We are well rid of Blunkett

"How the executive of the govt can decide to ignore a piece of legislation because it's inconvenient"
It happens all the time - not always for the worse.
Example 1 - MCA Reporting Regulations 2004. "A fresh opportunity for the public to consider the legal requirements applicable to small craft is being provided as soon as reasonably practicable." D Jamieson,MP Dept for Transport
Example 2 - Following a huge outcry in Cornwall over the requirement for planning permission to fly the Cross of St Piran flag the minister responsible for this stupidity has told local planners to "turn a blind eye".
In both cases ministers have decided to ignore poor legislation that they themselves have concocted.
It's time they should go?

Re: Amazing ain\'t it! NB

This reminds me of the sort of discussion we have at our club. Few are prepared to get involved but they do like complaining about those who do.

If you dont like any of the politicians we have got, put yourself up for election.

Re: Amazing ain\'t it! NB

erm .. this is not about politicians or hunting but about a cynical & flagrant abuse of the parliamentary process with deep ramifications into constitutional democracy.

Re:Christmas spirit (hic) NB

My boat has been recently hauled out for the winter and the hull shows signs of deep ramifications and flagrant abuse.
Should I get rid of it or just put on another coat of antifouling?

What? And mix with that bunch of teenagers. No Thanks
I am of an age when I can now sit back and say that I have done my bit - not as a politician, you understand, but service to the nation of another kind. I am allowed to be a grumpy old man!
