The lanes are about 5 miles wide so each takes around an hour to cross. Nowadays most ships stick to the lanes, but there are also ferries running between Portsmouth and Cherbourg which cross the lanes. Many years ago it was not uncommon to see a 'rogue' ship travelling the wrong way, but I haven't seen this recently.
