Amaya had a spy

Christian

The lanes are about 5 miles wide so each takes around an hour to cross. Nowadays most ships stick to the lanes, but there are also ferries running between Portsmouth and Cherbourg which cross the lanes. Many years ago it was not uncommon to see a 'rogue' ship travelling the wrong way, but I haven't seen this recently.

No TSS

I think one reason that there is not a legal traffic separation scheme here is that at various points along this stretch, ships turn out of the general flow to proceed to Cherbourg, Le Havre, Portsmouth or Southampton. Or, of course, join the lanes if they've departed those places. Also, of course, these are not 'narrow waters' compared to the Dover Strait, or the tight turn around the Casquets a little further west.

You'll see on Tome's charts EC1 and EC2 mid-channel buoys between the two lanes which are marked 'area to be avoided'. This creates a de-facto separation zone between east and west bound traffic.

Go on! What do you mean by 'posting tides'....

Great pics, and just what one might expect to see - rather proves the x tide thread of a week or so ago!

Hi Qsiv

I mean it would be great to post wind and tide arrows alongside each position. The more info you include, the more informative the plot becomes. As you well know!

Provided that you have the data in the Nav6 it obviously isnt difficult - but teaching OziExplorer to do it might be!

I'll have a little play at importing your data into my nav system, and see if I can get you some pictures back. Unfortunately I'm not allowed with my licence to export to JPEG, so it will have to be a simple screen shot.

No delivery date promised - I'll have to fit it in amongst real paying work, I'm afraid!

Right. I've fiddled with my code, and imported your track data, and can take a screen shot, convert to a JPEG, and send you a file - if you PM me with a suitable address. I've added both wind barbs and tidal vectors for your delectation.

I can also add the track the system would have reccomended to you - there are some differences, which are partly explained by me using an estimated set of polars. Other differences relate to the system attempting to negate the tidal effects on the TWS. It looks as though this may be behind the slowdown in progress as you came up to the Nab (or did you snag something on the rudder?) - for whatever reason the drop in speed to two knost must have been like a kick in the teeth after such a crossing.

Hi Qsiv

I've sent you a PM, be interested to see this. Thanks and regards.

Your quite right, I did not enjoy the slowdown to an otherwise v fast crossing!

Hi Tom

Well your example sure is a motivator!

Think I have got everything set up now software wise to do it with a whole lot of points going into a text file for later playing around with. Will try it next weekend on the boat as I don't have any NMEA data here at home. If it works I will tie a notebook down on board and record some Cook Strait crossings (plus others - we do Wellington<->Nelson before next winter to get the boat lifted and that is a really nice voyage).

Not sure when the trips will be though as I am committed to being overseas for some period every month through to May. But will be squeezing some in.

If others are interested enough to make it worthwhile your posting it somewhere, I would be very interested in seeing QSIV's production of your data.

And the rugby - well NZ stuffed up being involved in the hosting with Australia, so will not be surprised if they do the same in the matches too. I have to be in Hobart, Tasmania sometime in the next fortnight but the only game there is Namibia vs Romania in Launceston on the 29th Oct, so I don't think I will bother!

Regards
John

Now lets see the \'Actuals\'

Your charts clearly show the ideal, theoretical ground track taking into account the tides.

Now can we see your ACTUAL course, please!!

Re: Now lets see the \'Actuals\'

Nick

You taking the p*** or what??!

The tracks are actual positions, not planned or theoretical

Re: Now lets see the \'Actuals\'

Affirmative. Take it as a compliment !!

I was genuinely impressed, to the extent that I now fully intend to buy an ICS6, instead of just thinking about it.

Thought as much. If you do get a Nav6 plus I'll send a link to the software to decode the files.

Re: Now lets see the \'Actuals\'

Stand by - I'm sending Tome a version with wind barbs, tides, and also an optimised plan based on winds, tides and Amaya polars. The polars are only estimated as I dont have Heritage 37 polars to hand - I've taken those froma similar Swan, and taken a few percent off as the Heritage is less race oriented.

Thanks for this, look forward to seeing them. I reckon Derek (skip for the day) will learn a lot from these also. Can't access private email from here so will post this evening.

Qsivs Analysis

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://home.btconnect.com/Amaya/Amaya_Web1.htm>Here it is</A>.

This shows Qsivs calculations for optimum track next to actual, plus some polars estimating Amayas performance. I think these are a little high so Qsiv will tweak them down a touch and we'll have another iteration. It's interesting stuff, thanks for your effort Qsiv! Wait til I tell my crew they could have had another 2 hours in their bunks.

You'll also find links to the equipment used to interface GPS/instruments etc for automatic recording of data.

Re: Qsivs Analysis

I goit one o' them there things and it don't even record the weather!!
I fear there is a problem, with me being too long sighted to see the display, or me being too stupid to set it up, mind you Duncan has had a go and it still reads best part of sod all and not much of that!

Mind you...

with Duncans' power boat navigation, (we could be there in an hour at EC2 comments don't cut well with the crew) it's probably best not recorded..

Didn't look too bad on paper though.with a little correction of say only 5 degrees, now the what was the mix of blackcurrent and apple to ci...........
