it was a true race where skill was the domanant factor, not finance.

While I agree skill was the dominant factor - that is only because both teams are so well financed that they appear to be very evenly matched!
What the LV campaign showed fairly well is that performance was closely linked to overall budget.

Delta is mathematical/engineering symbol meaning "difference", in this case, time difference. Usually expressed as greek letter (small triangle) as in Ät to mean temperature difference between two objects.

Suspect it is a bit of what edward says and one of those imaginary triangles they draw on tv to show the gap etc. Well they used to show on Beeb but not anymore, too many important horse races to get in.
