I removed the two alternators from our boat which have been playing up over the past few months. They are on Volvo TAMD63p engines.

Yesterday I dropped them off at a local alternator repair company who called me this morning to say they needed overhauled at £180 each plus (I think) parts. That seems rather a lot of cash for an alternator repair, when I see new alternators being advertised on ebay as direct replacements for around £100 each. The Volvo originals are advertised MarinePartsEurope for about £1000 each! Volvo parts are expensive but £900 of a difference seems so far apart that the £100 alternators look too cheap! I sense a catch!

Does £360 to overhaul two alternators seem like a reasonable price, or should I go elsewhere, or buy the £100 ebay ones or even just do some DIY on them myself? I am okay with electrics/electronics and taking things apart etc... although never had a reason to fix an alternator so don't have any hands-on experience.

Thanks.

Must be worth getting a few quotes first, I have so far always repaired / refurbed starters and alternators.
Many cheap ones advertised are refurbished anyway if you check wording carefully.
I have used:

G & C Auto Marine
400 Kinson Road
Bournemouth

T: 01202 575 260

They have done starter motors and alternators for me over the years, always reasonable.......so far!
