Skill, and advises are good for me.
Thank

I've seen diagrams for this arrangement but I think there are several problems.

(1) Gearing up the shaft rotation to give the correct RPM at the alternator
(2)Getting a drive belt on the shaft
(3) Fitting a suitable pulley on the shaft.

BUT
It might just work and give you some generating power under sail. Maybe a towed generator is a simpler project.
Good luck!!

I smell trolls here......ever tried running an alternator backwards?....which is what would happen in reverse gear /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Perfection is achieved not when there`s nothing more to add...but when there is nothing more to take away.

Hi

When we bought our yacht there was a second alternator below and behind the engine gearbox which was belt driven off the shaft. It had suffered from damp in the bilge and on closer examination, after we removed it, was thick gunge and rust inside. It was beyond repair so we have not replaced it.

In oceanic navigations day by day propellers are a good way to generate electricity.
I suppouse that towed generations propeller are very simpled but I dont now how practise is in fact
Thank

Buying a towed generator would be a whole lot easier. Some hydraulic gearboxes dislike being turned by the propeller for long periods and need either a folding prop or a shaft brake. Anyway, the rotating prop makes a irritating noise on a sailing boat.

There certainly used to be shaft drive alternator kits available some time ago, back in the days when a 35 amp alternator was the largest you could get.

Its the cooling fan that determinates the direction

Quite a few french boat have it, the usual limiting factor is that one must be able to fit a 20-25cm diametre wheel on the coupling gear in order to get the sufficient number of rpm...

Alternators are often of the permanent magnets type.

FWIW Valeo makes this alternator

I should have a picture of one installation somewhere, I'll look.
